But, do you still feel, that when illuminated with a regular incandescent light, the 700 is still dimmer and fuzzier than the 505?

The 700 was actually incredible for reading at night. The internal light is perfect. During the daytime I did not like the 700 due to the glare in the screen. I can see my reflection in the sceen of the 700 when I read. |

In other words, the 700 is a great bedtime reader!
However, what makes it different from a much cheaper palmtop or backlit led screen @ night? Even an Acer Aspire One or similar with resolutions of 1024x600 can handle 4-5hours reading (maybe 6 on lowlight & hi-capacity battery if you're lucky), for a lower price; plus it can do so much more! |

I'll pay extra for the lack of eye strain and battery life over resolution right now. Until someone comes along with some new tech that has similar properties of eInk in terms of eye strain, eInk is what I'll buy. If it wasn't for eInk, I wouldn't be reading eBooks at all, I'd still be collecting reams of dead trees for technical reading (which I hate, and usually technical reading I only do once, and don't have a need to show off the collection). It also helps that eInk doesn't blast light directly into your eyes, which is the main reason why LCDs/CRTs produce eye strain at short ranges in the first place. I just received mine today. It was a complete surprise. I didn't receive an email from Sony and I thought they weren't shipping until the 14th. Anyway, Yeah!!!

I assume the 2nd and 3rd photos were to show glare of PRS700 screen, but who reads at a 45 degree angle. First pic is a better comparison, but cameras can't get a true focus looking through layers of glass/plastic, yet the PRS500 looks as if it has the edge on clarity; yet will clarity win over functionality?

I just got mine today, but the local Sony Store is getting theirs this week too; I plan to swing by the Sony Store tonight and see if I can see their demo 700, before I open this one (I'd rather return it unopened if I opt for the 505 instead).

I think shooting a small movie will be better!
Anyone having a digital camera should be able to shoot a (low quality) video. Just disable the sound and you can fit about 1,5minute of video in a 8MB file, depending on the resolution. |
