I think every piece of UK legislation (act of parliament) is still, and must be, transcribed onto animal skin vellum. Apparently paper, and its variants, have a nasty habit of decaying over the centuries....

Seems they don't trust new fangled technologies...

Makes sense. Where do I insert this ZIP drive on my new computer? Or this WORM drive? How does it attach?

There appears to have been one feature of these "books" that today's device manufacturers would do well to emulate. Amazingly, every single unit shipped with a fitted cover! The anxious wait for accessory manufacturers to get their act together, so familiar to us, was a thing unknown to "book" owners.

Some covers were elaborately ornamented and even made of leather. With proper care, they would last for the lifetime of the device, which was fortunate because there appears to have been no warranty, and aftermarket covers could usually be obtained only by shipping the entire unit to a repair service at the owner's expense.

Ah, but most of the "books" I have acquired in recent years have been so poorly attached to said cover that individual units (I THINK they're called pages, but I could be mistaken) simply fall out of the "book" and get lost, thereby rendering the "book" totally useless.

I e-read that they commonly begin the petrification process while still viable, by collecting and absorbing ambient dust motes and mites from their local environment. There is no way to stop this nor clean them, because the addition of soap and water interacts with the high acidity of the screens and reduces them to mush, a mache, so to speak.

I was looking at a web site that specialized in old devices and there was something called a "paper shredder" that said that it was used for securely disposing of "..., books, manuscripts, ...." I guess that they had a problem with getting rid of those "books" way back then. Today we can simply hit the delete key and they are gone.

That's what you think, Wood. Destroying a hard disk is rather troublesome.

"paper shredder" sounds like a horror movie. Did these shredders come to your house to get rid of these books?

The answer to every problem is "Buy something sweet to eat" or "Hit it with a hammer". Guess which answer I've used with the above troublesome problem?

Cheers,
Marc (after using the hammer, I bought myself something sweet to eat)

But, paradoxically, they were prone to bugs that resulted in data loss and even actual hardware damage.
