![]() To be honest, the question about reading on a plane during the "Turn devices off" period is usually moot for me. I enjoy takeoff and landing (and "achieving cruising altitude" and descent), but the truth is they both also get the "motion sickness" thing going with me, so I'm usually either concentrating on a forward bulkhead, or distant vistas out the window. Cheers, Marc |

I've broken a 505 screen like this. I made the mistake of placing it in the pocket with the screen facing out, then my knee hit it...and bye bye 505. If you place it with the screen facing in, you should be fine.

If I were explicitly asked to turn it off, I would, because it is never in your best interest to give a stewardess a reason to report you for misbehaviour. I have yet to be asked, though. Sometimes I hold it inside a magazine so it would take a close look for anyone to figure out what it is, other times I don't bother. The only times anyone has commented on it, it's been "what is that, how cool, where do you buy it" and a couple of times "aren't they great, I have one too."

In the past I always hid my laptop underneath the red blanket.
as soon as we're in the air,and people start standing up to get their electronic stuff I get my laptop and ready to go! I think with an electronic reader it's even easier to do |

well, the thing doesn't transmit radio waves, so what's the problem????
Yes, I know every electronic device emits radio waves but seriously, grow either some balls or a brain. The tv monitors in the seat backs emit more RF than the reader does, I'm sure. |

Maybe the turbines in a plane emit electromagnetic waves at startup or something, seeing they are so large.
Probably the airplane companies want to prevent people charging them for destroying their sensitive electronic devices. You know, a wire in a magnetic field can generate electricity, which electronic devices are very sensitive to. I have never tried leaving my laptop on during takeoff, however I have left it on standby without much trouble. I wonder what people who have bad hearing do with their earmonitors.. And what about Casio watches? And Alarm clocks? Or any other that is not winded for that matter? Analogic reflex cameras? These have battery powered light meters that cannot be turned off...
I have used the Reader a couple of times when flying and never turned it off or was asked to. And I take aisle seats, for planes are designed for kids. I have been seen clearly. Really now, I do as I am requested but if the plane is really going to have any sort of trouble for whatever usual electronic device, I really want to know it and want it searched and retired from each and every passenger. What percentage of a**holes can fly any given day? say a 1% (pretty low, I think). You get from 1 to 7 guys (depending on the plane) keeping the phone mute but working in case they get texted or emailed. If that is of any real relevance I would like this measures to be efficiently enforced. As I said, I have no problem with doing as I am requested, but I don't buy all this. I think it goes more with keeping some sort of order and quiet. Imagine 200 people talking themselves out of boredom at the same time through their cells. It is like when you fly long, they feed you plenty and then rise the heat so you get drowsy, fall sleep and don't pester around the aisles. People in a plane are not people after all. We are cattle. |
