Are there any videos on the internet where they show how pdfs look like on the two Sonys (505 and 600)?

I didn't read the complete thread, but the 600 handles pdfs ok if you use the pan and zoom function. Reflowing will mess up pages having charts, formulas and such. The pan and zoom function will retain the page layout but will handle the page more like an image where you zoom in and then move around the image to get into view whatever you want to see on the page.
I used the 505 before, and extracting pdf pages to images worked pretty good. Allthough you cannot move around the image freely when zoomed in. You can think of it the following way: You zoom in and now the image gets divided into a 3x3 grid. So moving the window you're watching will "jump" you from A1 to A2 or to B1 (if you think of the grid like an excel sheet from A1 to C3). So if a formula is somewhere on A1 and A2, you cannot see the whole formula as you jump from cell to cell. The 600 can move around freely so that you can setup your zoom level and section to accomodate the screen. It's probably not the very best to read letter sized pdfs, but it's a workaround and you still have the better portability of the device and the lower price compared to the bigger readers. I would have preferred the larger readers, too, But I wasn't willing to jump the fence on such a high price. |

For the money, do you all think the Sony 600 is an adequate pdf reader? Been researching this for some time. Tech manuals (Some new, some ancient paper manuals scanned to pdf) are my primary reason for getting a reader, though I expect I'll start getting books in time

I would say yes.
It handles pdfs adequately fast (for my taste). It could be faster, but with a book, you have to turn pages, too. Like stated, I can read real pdfs, scanned pdfs and text only pdfs to a satisfactory level. Don't interpret my satisfactory as a "it works so so". I mean the device really handles pdfs to my likes. ![]() All other tradeoffs apply. No firmware updates from Sony, glare, finger prints due to touching the screen..... If you can live with all that, the reader, in my opinion is a fine pdf reader. I don't know how the handling of pdfs is like on a kindle with the 2.5 firmware. They added pan and zoom for the 2.5 release. |

I don't own a 600 but believe it should do a good job as pdf reader for his size.
Although it would be better to get a PRS 900 if possible. It's greater display helps a lot while reading all types of pdfs. Unfortunately it's a little bit more expensive ($349.99 at sonystyle.com) than the 600. On the bad side it's still a Sony. No Firmware updates, bad support... I believe the best would be the Skiff or Que Reader when they are available. |
