Sorry to be a pain but I'd also love to get this.
I have a Kindle and a bazillion purchased books. If I like the new Sony reader, I am not averse to the prospect of converting my purchases to load up on it. I'm not a pirate, truly, but these are MY ebooks, I paid for them, why should I be tied to a particular reader? |

I certainly agree with that. I bought a kindle several weeks ago even though I already have a sony 505, just because of the additional content. I didn't have a problem discovering how to convert my kindle content (with the exception of the azw1 or topaz books) so I can read it on my sony, some of it via this forum and some via google. Just remember when you google that azw books are based on the mobi format and with a little perseverance you should be able to find the instructions via google.

John Appleseed, converting won't help you because you CANNOT buy Kindle content without a Kindle.

I do not believe this to be correct. You can have the *free* Kindle app for your iPhone, iPod Touch, Blackberry and/or PC, and be able to buy books from the Kindle Store.

ironically you can not remove the DRM from files downloaded to Kindle for the PC as they have an added layer of DRM, but you can remove the DRM from files downloaded over whispernet to your Kindle and then copied to your PC while your Kindle is connected via USB. Those files are workable via the python script

This was correct at the time it was written - October 2008 - before the apps for iphone/PC became available. A lot has changed since October 2008 and today.

That's a $30 program to convert to PDF which is not an eBook format. Last edited by Dr. Drib; 03-11-2010 at 02:24 PM. |

It does seem clear to me that most people who want to do this don't own a Kindle, and could therefore use Kindle PC (mentioned by others) and download the hack. Also, as has been mentioned, some of us might just want to take a Kindle book off our Kindles and put it into another form for other readers. I have the problem of two different Kindle accounts in my own home (spouse) and a bit of a fight letting us share books. I know we could do it on the same account, but we both like separate control/monitoring of spending, so we set it up separately. Also, that way we have "clean" books on one of the accounts none of which we mind the kids looking at. I'm hunting down solutions for multi-account management and sharing for the above reasons.
