Also take a look at feedbooks. They have very nice news feeds, all nicely preformatted so you don't have any hassles.

EDIT: It seems this has already been pointed out. My bad.

Yes it has and I tried that a while back. I was never able to get full articles it seemed. Everything was a just a teaser. So I stopped trying to use it.

It seems like it.

The feeds will load on the device when I open them. But when I select a thread: top news let's say. The device crashes on formatting. Annoying. At least most work fine.

when links cause crashes, i often find that using the table of contents instead works

As an add on, when I first started using feeds, I had nothing but trouble. I would go into a 'book' and start reading from the beginning. Didn't even really pay attention to, or know that there was a useful table of contents. Now I start every feed using the TOC. Navigation is easier and problems are almost all gone.

Yep the Table of contents method has helped a bunch it seems.
Wired still crashed but the others seem more stable.

OK RSS feeds are not the answer I am looking for.

Back on topic, I found a good substitute for non-kindle users - Newsstand.com offers subscriptions to various papers, in almost identical 1:1 replication of the originals. They have their own proprietary software for viewing, but with the option to print. So if you have a PDF Printer Driver installed, you can export the entire paper to PDF which will be totally "DRM" free. After installing the software and setting up an account it took me under 3 minutes to download a single issue of the WSJ, and export it to a DRM free PDF. Simply 'download', 'print to PDF' and thats it. Unfortunately they don't have the far superior Financial Times, but still a pretty good selection - NYT, WSJ, Harvard Business Review and the Far Eastern Economic Journal. The WSJ is the Asian edition but in my experience they are almost identical to the US edition except for the advertisements and some other minor changes. Unfortunately they don't offer student discounts as most news publications do so if anyone is interested in spreading the cost of a subscription then I am game .

But those PDFs aren't readable on a 6 inch screen. In fact, I find them painful to navigate even on a desktop screen. Indeed, the very idea of trying to replicate a design that is optimized for paper on a computer screen is a bit silly, IMO.

Newspapers are a pain to read whether they are on screen or on paper.

Not really, I rather enjoy reading newspapers created from RSS feeds on my ebook reader. They come with nice easy to navigate menus which makes getting to the articles I want to read a breeze.

Yep if I could get the Detroit News and LA Times Recipes working I would be very happy with using just the rss feeds and Calibre. Those are the two that I have been trying to get to work and it is beyond me, how to get the full articles downloaded is a tad confusing for a non-techie like me. I hope to eventually.

The Newstand idea is great in theory but a pain to read on the device itself.

Note to Kovid,

You should build into Calibre a method to allow people to submit recipes they create, and then redistribute them on a web page, or with updates, or with a realtime connection in Calibre. This would be a great way for this avid community to share their efforts and cleverness.

Kudos for a great job with Calibre.
