Forgive the question, but if you don't like ads, why not just buy the non advertising-supported version of the Kindle? If you make the conscious decision to buy an advertising-supported device, then naturally it's going to have advertising on it!

Plus, even if you bought an ad-supported version, you can have them removed for the same amount as the difference between an ad-supported and ad-free device.

Emailing ebooks to the Kindle is surprisingly simple with Calibre. I had expected a lot more setup being required but nope, all I needed was to put in my kindle.com (to) and gmail.com (from) email addresses. No futzing around with POP3, password settings, etc. necessary.

I tried it last night (just for testing purposes). I emailed 12 ebooks (via Calibre) to my Kindle email. Worked beautifully. Calibre might have needed to send those emails one by one, but *I* didn't.

As for downloading, it's very easy to deliver/push entire batches of cloud content to multiple devices registered to your Amazon account. On my tablet, I just went to Manage content and devices - checked all the new ebooks (filed as Docs) - Deliver (you're allowed to select multiple devices at the same time). Sent it to 2 PW3 and 3 iOS devices in just one go. Surprisingly, both covers and Whispersync work.

Note, this was the first time I've ever used the email to Kindle feature and I'm pleasantly surprised with how easy it all is.

My primary/base format is epub and if I switch devices, easy enough to convert from epub to something else using Calibre. Disk space is cheap. As has been mentioned, this isn't even a big issue with dual-format mobi. That said, there's really nothing in KF8 that I consider a must-have. I actually disable hyphenation on my epub readers.

The one issue with Calibre and dual Mobi format is that it can't edit the metadata of books in dual Mobi format. That means that if, as I do, you use a Calibre metadata plugboard to attach series name and number to your books, the plugboard won't work if a book is in dual Mobi format. Just something to be aware of.

All Baen's Mobi books are in dual Mobi format which is why I always download from Baen in ePub format and then convert to AWZ3 for my Kindle.

I wonder what you are doing that I'm not. I cannot get my Calibre library to email at all. Even created a GMX account. It just says "working" and never sends.

Well, I NEVER could get Calibre to work with gmail. (your description is what happens with Gmail) But it works just fine with my MS outlook account. Maybe GMX has similar issues, whatever those issues are!

Mine was pretty much zero config so hard to guess. I don't think Calibre even goes through Gmail's servers. It just "spoofs" the from address. Maybe some firewall blocking Calibre?

If it helps, I used a fresh copy of Calibre Portable (3.18, 32-bit) on Windows 7 (64-bit). Also, the gmail from address I'm using in Calibre is on the "Approved Personal Document E-mail List" in my Amazon account settings. I believe Amazon will reject any emails from an address not on the approved list.

With gmail, I could manually email a book from it to Amazon, but there was 'something' that I could never figure out with either Calibre, gmail, or Amazon. I went through the same set up in Calibre with my outlook account with no problems at all.
