I wouldn't say "important" it's just nice to have the option. I like having an image I've chosen displayed on my eReader when I open the cover or pull it out of its pouch.

We're just musing here. I don't think this is a "make or break" type thing. For some of us it would be nice if Amazon (and other eReader makers) offered this feature. I think that's all we're saying.

To be honest here, I've read of more people wanting Kindle eBooks open at the cover than they do custom sleep images. So let's petition for Kindle eBooks to openat the cover and once that happens, then go for the custom sleep images.

+1

If I were to request features, I would have some higher priority requests.

It would be nice to have that option also. Personally I prefer displaying my own images over the book cover display but I realize this is personal taste and I'm probably in the minority here.

neither of these are technical hurdles to overcome. it's already been done. if amazon wanted, they could add both of these features. it would not be difficult to do both vs just one of them. like i mentioned before, it's about choice and preference.

the reason for not doing it is business related, not a technical one.

No, unless it is an option. If I could only have either open at cover or at the beginning of the book, I rather see the beginning of the book. Only if I am really really bored do I need the front matter or the cover.

I remember books by cover and title more easily than by title alone. It's a convenient memory trigger for me. Also some covers are beautiful and add to the book. I like the White Dragon by McCaffrey, Intergral Trees by Niven, Fool's Run by McKillip and a lot more. Mostly Science Fiction and Fantasy.

Personally I would rather start at the cover. Sometimes Amazon skips over quotes and explanations that add to the enjoyment of the book, stuff the author felt it was important. I always jump back to the cover and turn back into the book, just in case. It would be nice to at least have the option to start at the cover.

It's nothing to do with Amazon. It's wherever the book creator set the "Start Reading" position to be.

If I was using a Kindle, I would not want this as an option. I would want it to just open at the cover and show me the entire eBook. If I was an author, I would not want this as an option.

And setting the Start Reading position to the cover doesn't work. Can you set it to the first page after the cover?

Sure - you can set it anywhere in the text that you wish. You can't set it to the cover, because that's not part of the text.

Amazon has their own ideas about where a book should start regardless of the publisher's intentions. You can read more here.

If I read that thread correctly, it seems to be talking about problems with books created by conversion from an ePub. All the books I've created myself with "kindlegen" seem to open correctly where I've told them to.

It occurs in books purchased from Amazon. The change to the start position happens in the publishing workflow after the publisher has sent the book to Amazon. It doesn't affect books you convert yourself and side load.
