Oh, I see, nothing to do with footnotes. I've never noticed this in my own kepubs because I always remove all variants of space characters surrounding the m-dash character.

I don't know the answer to your question. Perhaps it's a quirk of the kepub rendering app with non-breaking-space when text is full-justified. Does the problem go away if you display the kepub with ragged-right (left justified)? Is it just nbsp with m-dash or do n-dash give the same problem?

Yes, the old id is not necessary because it has been replaced witha new id="fn1" to match the actual footnote number.

I just wanted to make as few changes as possible. Feel free to experiment further

In epub everything works fine. Because of this, I do not switch to kepub.
