Update: I downloaded some free ebooks from BN; the 600+ epubs I sideloaded with Calibre disappeared from the library list and haven't come back. I currently have about a hundred titles on it now, and it seems stable.

My feeling is the Glowlight 3 just can't handle updating the library database file with too many sideloaded epubs. A definite limitation, but 100 is still more than enough to read for now. Don't know if it's a hardware or operating system problem. I doubt if there's anything Calibre could do, but I haven't tried sideloading without Calibre.

Fyi.

calibre simply copies files using stadard file system calls, the Nook has no database or similar to update.

Then the Android os for this model is very unstable. I find that for sideloaded epubs, the device won't even remember the changes I make to fonts when I switch between books.

I hope they issue an update soon; I like the lighting feature and general readability, but it is clear that this device is not friendly to material that is not downloaded directly from BN.

Out of curiosity, have you used the beta update that allows a single partition for purchased from B&N and sideloaded books along with other updates?

The discussion in the Nook forum has some positive comments though mostly on having 5.3GB for sideloaded ebooks. The links to the download keep getting updated, the last one posted was for v.4.8.3.20 which can be downloaded from update.zip.

Thanks for this, David. Yes, I tried the beta update 3.4.8.6; will try 4.8.3.20.

I'm still enjoying the device but puzzled by its behavior. Call me a crotchety consumer, but I think a major brand marketing a device should have it together; the fact that they're still tweaking (but only issuing as betas?) shows this was a bit rushed.

Still enjoying the lighting feature of the Glowlight 3 but my old gloomy nook simple touch still behaves much more dependably.

Could be worse. I will admit to be puzzled as to why B&N removed the limit on sideloaded content and then re-imposed it in the GL3's RTM firmware. Admittedly, my exposure to the GL3 is limited to looking at it when I'm south of the border -- I can't justify owning a device which does not allow me to purchase content from the on-line store if I get desperate for new content.

I'm using the beta 4.8.3.20 (and also Calibre 3.14, btw) and have now added my entire library of 650+ books. Everything seems to be working very well, which is to say much better.

Still, for my loaded books, Glowlight 3 changes my font preferences back to defaults every time I switch between another book. Minor problem.

(Also, Mr. Goyal, I like the new, simpler icons for Calibre 3; it gives the interface a clean, fresh appearance!)

I have a Glowlight 3, and have the most recent update B&N sent out. Tonight it warned me I had a corrupted sideloaded file, so I erased them all. When I plugged it in to Calibre to reload them it didn't work. Calibre can't see my device.

I've updated to Calibre 3.15, closed and reopened it, turned the Nook off and back on, given it extra time, etc. Nothing works. Does anyone have any suggestions? I don't want to lose the 400 epub books I have on my laptop.

I reset it, and now it won't open ANY book at all. Plus Calibre still can't see it. I guess this means it's a device problem.
