What I like about running ADE using WINE is that I don't have to start up a VM. Also, I don't have to have a Windows license. I just plug in my Kobo, mount it, start ADE and I'm good to go.

Great. I'm glad you found a solution.

Note that I said Sony's reader software can be used as a generic ADE "device" in case you want to try that some day down the road It of course works with Kobo natively (as Sony sold their reader customers to Kobo) and generic acsm files are no problem either.

Sony's Software uses a version of RMDSK that's too old. So no, it won't work.

Either figure out how to run ADE 2.0.1 under Wine or dual boot Windows and run ADE 2.0.1.

Can you explain this some more? I can throw an acsm at Sony's reader software and it will download the book (admitedly native on OSX and not through wine on Linux). What am I missing? New installs won't let you authorize with Adobe? The reader software displays modern epubs badly? I'm not sure what you are saying.

Some stores (I think Google is one of them) don't work with the old 1.7 versions of ADE anymore. And since that was the latest version when Sony was still in the e-reader business their software never got updated past that.

I have no knowledge of Linux. However, as to the Sony software - I regularly buy epub books from the Google Play store and use Sony Reader for PC software to download the books on a Windows 7 PC and sync to a Sony reader.

Also, while Sony Readers no longer work directly with Overdrive libraries since the last major Overdrive update, the Sony Reader for PC software can still be used to download and sync library epubs.

Overdrive also needs ADE 2.0.1 and the Sony software (as you said) never got updated.

The best solution is to use ADE 2.0.1 and Calibre. It just works better. And it's a heck of a lot more future proof. You can install the DeDRM plugin and all your eBooks won't have DRM and you'll have them all organized and if you ever get a new Reader, Calibre will be there all ready for you.

I believe the Sony software also works with the DeDRM stuff.

The Sony Software should not be used. ADE 2.0.1 should be used.

I don't know anything about Linux, so this may not apply, but on my Windows 7 PC the Sony Reader for PC software still works with Overdrive library books. The Sony software version I have is 2.4.01.10241 in case that makes a difference.

I take your point but I just had too much trouble getting it to run in wine. It is a bit more long winded using a VM but it works.
You don't have to have a windows license btw, just skip the registration phase. Everything runs it just isn't registered for support. It doesn't even pester you to get a license either.

Yes, Overdrive works for me too, on both Windows and Mac versions of Sony Reader. I can also download books I bought from Kobo's book store and Google Play Books.

I wonder why it works for some of us but not for other posters?

(didn't mean to turn this into a Sony Reader thread, oops)

Since you are using the same Adobe ID, DeDRM works just as well no matter what software you use for the download.

And how is ADE any more future proof if you have to lock yourself in to version 2.0.1 to avoid getting the new DRM scheme?

To me, ADE seems less reliable and polished overall. I get incomplete downloads and accidentally create duplicate files. After returning library books, their epub corpses remain in ADE's folder indefinitely. Large downloads often don't finish and don't resume correctly. When I move ADE's window between high DPI and regular windows, the font often gets stuck in a ridiculously tiny size. There are just a ton of annoyances that come with using it.
