Harry, it was a bargain or free book from either kobo.com or smashwords, I believe.

Thanks, Peter.

Kobo don't (AFAIK?) have customer reviews, but Smashwords have them. I would have expected the fact that this was a "serial" to have been noted in a review.

What's really bad if is the author dies before completing the series. I was reading Changeling and Madwand by Zelazny. It ended at a point that just screamed "To Be Continued". Very frustrating that I'll never find out how it turned out.

Kobo has customer reviews, but not many of their customers bother to write them.

Those two books came out in 1980 and 1981. Zelazny died in 1995. I think the issue was more that Madwand didn't sell well enough to justify another book in that series. Personally, I thought that Changeling was good, but didn't really care for Madwand.

Sometimes that's not a problem. For example, Robert Jordan died and his Wheel of Time series was left unfinished. Brandon Sanderson finished it using Jordan's notes and help from Jordan's wife.

Is there someone way to learn this undisclosed fact before downloading or reading a book?

Thanks!
I DETEST partials. Unfortunately, they are becoming more popular. Some authors are upfront about it. Others are not. VERY ANNOYING. Edited to add: It's become especially popular on Amazon KU from what I've heard--supposedly, the thinking goes, since people are in a subscription, they won't mind partials because they can continue on without paying more...

Of course, that doesn't help if you got the book for free or bought the first part. I won't read partials even for free (not on purpose).

I will sometimes read a partial if it is from an author I already like and if there are a fixed number of volumes that will be included.

Certainly not an open-ended story from an unknown author.

I don't even like trying books in a new series much these days unless I am fairly confident the first book is a decent stand-alone story (based on reviews) or it is an author I know and like. I try not to start series unless they are already completed too.

Why keep digging this hole deeper?

The link was created when the post was moved; it replaced your thread so it was in exactly the place your thread would have been; it's still there. You didn't look carefully and it's findable even now. Just scroll back to March 26 in the Deals Forum. Oh, look! A link!

Look, we all make mistakes. But why insist on something that's so obviously wrong? Best just to move on instead of wildly pointing your finger.

"We all make mistakes". Thanks for that!

Agreed, obviously and no denying, the link is there now.

Moving on!

That happened to me with Dan Simmons Hyperion. I've refused to read anything by him since then.

For me, the real annoyance is when the book does not do that well and ends up being orphaned. I've read part 1 and then learned part 2 and further will never exist. And no chance to visit the Unseen University's library or the Library of Lost Books from Hell on High.
