I've only ever sideloaded books on all my eReaders going back to the Sony ones. I feel Kobo is more than adequate in that regard.

What I do depends on the fonts used. If the main font used is something no actually needed and it's not a font I like or has not enough weight, I'll remove it and leave the rest. Then I'll subset. That can remove some of the fonts not used and it will reduce the size of those used. Also, I always losslessly compress the graphics and remove unused CSS. All of this makes for a smaller eBook and one more likely to work. I also check the eBooks with epubcheck. I've read of too many problems when an eBook is not technically correct.

This seems to work fine. I'll have to thoroughly test it over the next few days, but it certainly looks like an easy solution. I convert most of my side-loaded books from various mobi formats anyway, so it's no extra trouble.

Many thanks!
