I'd put some of it toward a good rubbery case designed for tablets handled by kids.

I doubt you would need to strip kobo cook books as Android has a kobo reading app that you could use. See Kobo eReading Apps in our wiki.

Thanks. I just don't care for the app much.

I bought one today but won't have it for a couple days. Thanks for the help!

I have the new Nook tablet and like it a lot. The SD card issue was a struggle at first - and some of the apps do not work on the SD card, like the Kindle app. I like being able to read my Kindle and B&N books on it, and some of the Kindle books did not play nice with my Glowlight Plus even when converted to epubs.
It does have Google Play already installed.
There were a couple of B&N books that did not show up in the B&N app, but I was able to look into the Nook file on the SD card through File Manager, find the book, click on it, and it opened in the B&N app.
I bought a little case with a cover for it. I did not get one of the screen protectors because they had terrible reviews and I had already had a problem putting one on my old Nook Simple Touch - ended up having them install it at the store.
If you get one, post here and I will tell you as best I can what finally worked with the SD card.
