Actually, it does not work. It depends on the website you visit and some do not respect Do Not Track requests.

I just found this while looking for a way to sign out of my Google account on my tablet using Chrome. I have the Google site as my homepage. I would sign out, but when I went back to the Google site I was still signed in. Apparently I was tricked into signing into Chrome at some point. I had sync turned off, so there was no reason to keep me signed in except to gather data. Once I went into settings and signed out of Chrome I could sign out of my Google account on the website. I rarely use Chrome on my devices so they didn't get a lot of info on the websites I visited.

When you browse the web on computers or Android devices, you can send a request to websites not to collect or track your browsing data. It's turned off by default.

However, what happens to your data depends on how a website responds to the request. Many websites will still collect and use your browsing data to improve security, provide content, services, ads and recommendations on their websites, and generate reporting statistics.

Chrome doesn't provide details of which websites and web services respect Do Not Track requests and how websites interpret them.
