The affiliate tracks where the device was purchased. Retailers are given some control by Kobo over firmware versions on their device. The affiliate value is used to see what the newest build a retailer has approved for their devices.

I just did a full update with Sync (actually using synchack) and it now works!
At least the buggy screen refresh is gone. I have to make the missing translations now
