Yep. I think we've had it on pretty good authority that the screens won't be available in volume until spring 2009. I'm not holding my breath. Besides, I like having a smaller reader for novels. I want a larger one, too, for tech books, specs and such but I love having one the size of a paperback that I can easily carry around in my handbag for recreational reading.

Edit:

Oh and it looks like Amazon has now officially said no knew Kindles at all this year, big or small.

Yep, that'll work. To each her own. I only keep a small amount of "to be read" books on my Kindle. The rest are backed up on my Amazon Media library or my PC. Perhaps if Amazon adds some type of folder support I will get and SD card and keep more on the device.

This won't work unless you break the DRM first. I don't have two Kindles to confirm this, but based on how MOBI/AZW DRM works, your current ebooks should be locked to the PID of your existing Kindle.

Since Amazon already allows multiple Kindles per account, it should be possible to register a Kindle 2 to that account and re-download your existing ebooks from Amazon (via the internet or via whispernet).

I agree that keeping a copy on your PC is a good idea, but these are insurance against Amazon getting out of the ebook business (which is unlikely - even though they have done this once before) and to allow you the option of switching to a non-Amazon ebook reader in the future.

Regarding reading and annotating PDF journal articles, I do this on my iLiad now and it works well, so I don't think we need much bigger screens than what are available today. One point that many people forget is that you can leave out the margins when displaying the PDF. (However, you lose some prime scribbling space that way.)

My 2 cents: I think mp3's on the kindle is silly. It's just adding un-needed fluff to a good product. Don't waste time, energy, and money to develop something just for the sake of having it. How many people already own an ipod, or a cellphone that plays mp3's? I would have loved to have a kindle with all my text books on it!! I wish I could get all my manuals for work on it! I'd use it everyday for work as well!

It doesn't take away from the text aspect to be able to listen to mp3's some of which may be audiobooks. Since Amazon now owns Audible.com, they are making sure you can access their books in whatever form they sell them.

I love listening to audiobooks but I've never used my Kindle for that. It's a bit big. If I'm going to listen on headphones, I want something I can put in a pocket and be able to move around. I normally listen while I'm walking or working out. I actually use my phone since I'm going to have it with me anyway if I'm out for a walk. I guess there's no harm in including it but it's not an ideal form factor, IMO.

No .... actually, you can register up to six Kindles to the same account. The books are keyed to your account, not a single Kindle. So, since I have a backup, it is very (very) simple to transfer the books to a second Kindle, and a third, and a fourth .... well, you get the idea.

I don't use mine for audiobooks either though I have listened to a few podcasts on it. There are people who do use it that functionality.

If I can find an mp3 of white noise or rain sounds, I'd load them so that I could block out obnoxious sounds while I'm trying to read in some environments.

No actually they are keyed to a specific Kindle. If you have more than one registered when you go online to download a book it asks you what Kindle it is for and encrypts it accordingly.

Actually, you can register as many Kindles as you like to one account. Only 6 at a time can share the same content.

You were actually the person who pointed this out the first time I learned about it.
