To confirm that the theory that the Glo HD is being replaced due to tight profit margins as opposed to some other reason is based on conjecture and available evidence as opposed to any definite word from from the company.

The reason I don't back it up with evidence is just as you say; I'm giving one more anecdotal report.

Actually it's a little more than that. I'm retired for a long time and I spend a lot of time reading forums, mostly book related, and talking with friends and other tenants who read in the retirement home where I live. The topic of screens comes up a lot and is often discussed and what I gave was my impression of the seeming consensus. I don't give any guarantee that I'm right. I think I'm right. I'm pretty sure I'm right. I'll be surprised if I turn out to be mistaken. But it's entirely possible.

People don't realize there are other sources for ereaders. Amazon does sell refurbed? used ones - bought an older Kindle like that, managed to get recipes on it, and it was in the kitchen for 6 months collecting flour.

Most people only know about the Nook and the Kindle. Borders used to sell Kobo, but Borders went belly-up.

The other half got bored and wanted an ereader, so I factory reset it about a year ago and gave it to him. It's still going strong.

I still have the original Nook Wifi I could put in the kitchen, except now I can print recipes from anywhere, including phone.

I liked the Nook and the buttons. I finally managed the inkBOOK Obsidian. I like it. Love the flat bezel - no crumbs or cat hair in the nooks and crannies. Best of all, it will use an SD card.

Given that the Glo HD is unavailable from Kobo and even if it is not discontinued, we have no idea when it would be available. So are you going to wait an unknown amount of time before you give up or are you going to buy an Aura H2O instead?

My pickle exactly, If they have abandoned their primary weapon to mount a challenge for Paperwhite 3, and went to downgrade, what is for me to do?

If I buy the Glo from ebay, will it have issues with software upgrade 3years later?

It would be silly for a company to just give up, they must be cooking something in the basement, and I'm afraid that if I buy now, few months from now they will surprise me with a Kobo GLO HD Freak, that will have slots and all sorts of goodies!

For the Glo, maybe not. For the newer devices, probably. Kobo are still updating the firmware for all the device from the Touch and on. We haven't had a release since January, but I expect one when the updates for the Aura ONE have settled a bit. Hopefully that is before the end of the year.

I think Kobo will stop releasing updates for a device when very few of that device is syncing to the shop. While enough people are using the shop with any particular model, it is in Kobo's interest to keep the device up to date with the the API they use for the shop. And the other changes will flow through with this. The only other reason to stop updating is if there is a hardware limitation in the device. The Touch has only 256MB of RAM. That could be a limiting factor for future changes.

I was surprised when the Glo HD was dropped. I was expecting the Aura H2O to be the one to go. Either Glo HD didn't sell as well as I thought, or the cost is to high for the price point. Or maybe the withdrawal is in preparation for a "Glo ONE" - 6": 300DPI with all the features of the Aura ONE. But the price will probably be more than the Aura H2O.

If the device works fine out of the box, do software updates really matter? In the days before cell phones getting the latest and greatest version of the OS, nobody seemed to care. And honestly, it's an e-reader. What more do you expect it to do?

Kobo is already so hackable you can change almost anything that bothers you about it now.

I dunno. Just my two cents.
