Our conceptions of "health" and "preventive health" have become absolutely obsessively focused on diet/exercise/weight, as a society. There are a whole range of things that are health determinants, possibly one of the biggest one being your socioeconomic status. Beyond that, advice on preventive health just seems to be diet-exercise-diet-exercise! When in fact, there are so many other things you can do to promote your own health:

- sleep enough hours
- wear a seatbelt, don't drink 'n' drive (or text 'n' drive)
- care for your teeth
- don't smoke, and drink in moderation
- wash your hands
- keep your immunisations up to date
- seek happiness, belonging, and contribution
- be creative

Happy to see that the Safari bug, introduced in iOS 10.0, which resulted in some websites not rendering correctly on page refresh, has been fixed in 10.1.1.

It's a clear case of age discrimination!

My iPad Mini Gen-1 is limited to iOS 9.3.5!
Too old and feeble for iOS 10!

Getting the same shabby treatment on my Vista desktop PC:
Internet Explorer, Chrome and Safari are not providing browser updates for Vista.
So far, Firefox is still showing respect for the elderly.

2017 might be an expensive hardware update year!

Yesterday I went ahead and upgraded my iPad Mini 2 Retina to iOS 10.x.x. I was starting to get the constant annoying nagging from Apple. I mostly use my 16GB Mini for reading and a few other tasks. No hard core memory and/or processor intensive stuff. I fully expected to see a marked slow down afterwards, but to my surprise iOS 10.x.x seems to run as fast as iOS 9.x.x was. So far so good. No glitches. I forgot to look at the amount of memory available before and after the update, so I have no clue as to how much more space iOS 10.x.x takes over 9.x.x on the Mini.

I'm still of the opinion that I will never update my iPhone 5 though. I keep it as a backup only, so it rarely even gets turned on, and when it does it is in Airplane mode to keep it from phoning home. The next upgrade I do will will likely be to buy a newer iPhone in a year or so, and then I will either sell the iPhone 5 or give it to a friend or family ember. Either way, I think I'll let a future owner decide whether to upgrade it to 10.x.x or 11.x.x.

I was surprised that Apple allowed my Mini 2 Retina to be upgraded. I'm guessing they won't allow it to upgrade to 11.x.x next year. Oh well, at least Apple allows for upgrades and even pushes them on us when we have an eligible device. So many of the companies who sell Android devices don't do that. Those owners often have to figure out how to upgrade on their own, and that can cause issues.

Yes, my wife's iPhone gets "pushed" all the time. I've set it to not "install" upgrades automatically, but it does "download" automatically. Hard to ignore a "500MB gorilla" after it's downloaded, so I usually install shortly thereafter.

I've seen several Black Friday previews. The Mini 2 Retina is still available; Walmart will have the 32GB WiFi version for $199. I might just cave in and buy one at that price to upgrade my non-Retina 16GB Mini. The Retina screen and twice the space are tempting.

That sounds like a good price. I paid $399 for mine with only 16GB a couple of years ago. I tried reading on an original, non-retina iPad when they were first released, but it was too rough and tiring on my eyes. The retina screen makes a huge difference.

I'm a later Baby Boomer approaching 60, so I find most of the so-called health apps to be nearly useless for my case. For me I just want to monitor sleep, heart rate, and activity levels. I'm not interested in dieting, running marathons, or most of what the younger folks do. I'm more interested in doing what I can to keep waking up on the sunny side of the grass! Like a lot of folks my age, my health is not what is was when I was 30, and I need to monitor it more closely. So I wish there were better apps geared toward Boomers and their health and not geared mostly for Millennials and their desire to obsessively exercise and lose weight. I want health apps, not exercise apps. And I don't need any stupid trophies awarded to me. Yep, the Garmin Connect app will give you a trophy icon if you meet or beat goals! Like I said, most apps are geared towards the needs of Millennials, not their grandparents.
I'm in pretty much the same boat, Jack. Except I'm closer to 70 than 60. But, the things that Apple calls "health" are generally not. I've pretty much abandoned the use of the health app as such. At best, it shows summaries. As far as sleep is concerned, its of little relevance to me to know I slept (for example) 5 hours. I want to know (and so does my doc) what the quality of that sleep was, and the health app does not record that information. Sleep cycle on the iphone does, as do a few other apps as well. On a fitbit, there is good information about quality and quantity and on Apple watch, well, the sleep apps are not that brilliant, but its early days.

I have found some interesting and useful health apps for Watch which are pretty good. Heart Watch and cardiogram (I need to keep an eye on tachycardia) and Sleep++ as I mentioned, and Sleep Watch (which is auto, but not very accurate, though you can edit... again, the time seems to take precedence over quality. I need to email them). Cardiogram seems to take your pulse often... and you can set it to constant recording if you want. Battery eating there.

WatchOS3 has solved many battery issues for me, and now, depending on apps in use, I can get about 24 hours from one charge. And since I put the thing on charge during the time i am vegging out in front of the TV, or just reading, the short battery life has become irrelevant to me.

IOS 10.1 is fine on my 5S now, 10 was awful which is why I downgraded at the time. That said, I mostly use the 6S for day to day things.

My Garmin vivosmart HR and its iPhone app and web Connect app give fairly good information on sleep too. It records heart rate and movement and then calculates when and how much light sleep and deep sleep I get in a night, as well as awake time too, and it charts it out really well in an easy to read and comprehend format. I just went in for my annual physical this past Thursday and I showed a few pages of reports to my doctor including:
  • Resting Heart Rate average for past four weeks
  • Average Heart Rate for past four weeks
  • Sleep Time patterns for past four weeks
  • Typical Night Sleep chart
  • Bad Night Sleep chart
  • Good Night Sleep chart

He found the reports very useful and was able to discuss some strategies for improvements. You can see some of the report examples attached. But like you, I just don't find the iOS Health app to be useful for actual health monitoring, at least not for a Baby Boomer.

Just had my iPhone 6 reboot when tapping the "return to a call" bar at the top of the screen. That's never happened prior to 10.1.1. Hopefully a one-time event, but we'll see.

The change to the alarm app is really annoying me. When you are half-awake it's really hard to hit the stop area to turn it off. It seems really sensitive and must be a small area to get it right. I miss the swipe.

I've never relied on BT for audio for nav. I still use an old Belkin Tunecast (at least I think thats what it was called) which charges, and sends to the car audio system by FM.

I've been noticing periodic dropping of my BT connection between my Garmin vivosmart HR watch and the iPhone 6 Plus. I also have issues with BT on my iPhone connecting to both my watch and my Toyota RAV4's system at the same time. I don't recall either issue prior to iOS 10.1, so there might be an issue with the 10.1.x. The BT connection between watch and iPhone drops out briefly but then immediately reconnects on its own without any action on my part. The only reason I know that it is dropping is because my watch vibrates and flashes a message telling me that it lost BT connection.
