Usually that's a quick(er than byte-by-byte comparisons / checksums) check to see if a file changed... same timestamp, same size = probably the same file. Size changed? Timestamp changed? New file -> update database ... better not to mess with it.

If you want to change those for series order, it's probably easier to change the actual ebook file size... appending stuff to epub/zip files is easy (you can't use zeroes, but zip itself appends nicely).

It would waste a fair bit of storage space... to me, series order is not important enough to go that far.

Not so fair because of a small detail: I don't mind the series order but for some books I reread from time to time and which are grouped in their own collection How could I do that trick?

It's normal, the statistics are triggered when you finish the books, not over finished books.

Using it a bit more today after my rather unpleasant and frustrating experience re battery life right after updating (seems to have stabilized for now), the FW also seems to cure the "phantom touch" associated with the official cover. No long does it triggers stuff when closing.

If by that you mean books being marked as complete after you finish them, it does work again, but the home screen widget doesn't seem to get updated right away when you end the book and get kicked back to the home screen. However, if you navigate anywhere else (say another book or the full reading stats screen), then go back to the home screen, the widget will then be updated. I'm not sure if it affects reading time as well. This is probably a bug.

Yes, for sideloaded books, the firmware checks the file size. If it is different from the database, then the book is removed and added as a new book. The calibre KoboTouch driver updates the file size to prevent this from happening if you resend a book.
