What is the life of a lithium-ion battery that gets topped up constantly most of the time vs a battery that gets charged when it runs low?

Not sure why every Oasis vs Voyage or other kindle discussion has to always go the same way with the battery issues. I have a K1 from 2008 and a K3 from 2010. I have a basic from 2012? can't recall now, a paperwhite from 2012? Again, can't keep up with the years. I have a Voyage, whenever that came out and bought the Oasis as soon as it came out. All the batteries on all of my devices still work. They were all heavily used with totally random ways of either topping off or going down a bit more. Now the older ones mostly get charged once a month.
So yeah, not worried about any battery with the Oasis. I doubt I will still have the same Oasis 5 years from now. So ask me again in 3-5 years to prove to anyone that the battery is still working on it. ![]() As to the actual question of the OP. If you are happy with your Voyage, you can't go wrong with it. For me, my Oasis is way better than my Voyage. Yet the Voyage is a very nice device, overall nothing wrong with it. But for me, I can hold the Oasis for longer and much easier. The small bezels on the Voyage did cause me to have it fall out of my hands. I cannot use a cover on it as its too heavy when i read. It goes in when I put it down or carry along. The actual real buttons are so much more pleasing for me to read with than the haptic. No more cramping. Those are very personal things though so it depends if that is important to you. My screen on level 11-12 is the same on both devices. Same contrast, same brightness, same tone. I can turn the light on the Voyage higher without having any issues all the way to highest. I wouldn't be able to read on it past 13 or so, so its a moot point. My Oasis starts showing a couple of brighter cones on the left as I turn it up. But again, I cannot read in bright light like that. I don't go higher than 12 at the most in daytime and down to 8-9 at night. So the screen on my Oasis is not quite as good as the Voyage. My Voyage is pretty flawless with no cones or anything. I do not see the cones on my Oasis though about 90% of my reading time. Only when the day turns to dark at some spots in the house do I notice it a little if I stare at it. Which now I just read. For me the Oasis design is so exiting and ergonomic, it was worth the price. Not since the K1 has a ebook reader been designed so well IMHO. |

I'm torn between a Paperwhite and the Oasis. My mind is well aware that objectively the Oasis isn't nearly twice as good as a Paperwhite... But my industrial design heart is begging me to buy the Oasis

If you keep it in a case, though (and personally I always keep all my readers in cases) you'll never see the back of it.

For me, the design should never set the price. It might look awesome, if the added price doesn't add functionality, I'll never get it. And for me, the Oasis is twice too expensive for what you get. While you could say the cover battery is added functionality, for me it's actually worthless (as I only read with cover anyway). |

Yes, I must admit that the modern trend towards ever lighter and thinner devices is not one I personally favour. I find some modern phones and reader too thin to comfortably hold, which is one reason (in addition to the protection issue) that I always have the device in a case. I really don't want a reader which will float away in a light breeze

Completely agree with you here too, loving my Oasis from the small footprint, the ergonomics, the weight and the new cover. For me it was well worth the price. |

![]() I just love the Oasis with its buttons, it's ergonomic shape with the bulk of the weight in the palm of your hand. I don't like covers (always use my phone and tablet without!), as they block the design of the device. When traveling or during idle periods, the snap on case would be a plus, and it will recharge the base units as well. I'm pretty much sold on the Oasis already, the only thing that keeps me from ordering is the price (read: the look on my wife's face when the mailman arrives) and the stories of visible light cones from the LED's. |

Sarrod, the price definitely is a large pill to swallow but once you can get over that or a convenient "oh not much more than my PaperWhite dear" then it's a lot easier to swallow.
I know some have had concerns about the leather case not fully encasing the rear of the Kindle allowing for possible marks/scratches. So far I haven't seen any evidence of that but it's possible though it may happen. However I think with the case being leather, I think the leather will probably degrade/mark more quicker than marks on the back of the Kindle. Amazon have some third party cases already that let you fully cover the Oasis however they don't permit for the battery case being on the Oasis. For me I'm using an Amazon Zip sleeve for transporting mine around so it doesn't get scratched up, it's just a fabric book sleeve mostly used for 7" Kindle Fire's but it's got protection and padded and has a zip so it won't fall out. The Oasis definitely is worth the extra money, it's just getting over that first hurdle ![]() |
