"A captive portal is a Web page that the user of a public-access network is obliged to view and interact with before access is granted. Captive portals are typically used by business centers, airports, hotel lobbies, coffee shops, and other venues that offer free Wi-Fi hot spots for Internet users."

Ah, well basically I was just wondering if your Wi-Fi works without updating to the latest firmware. Selecting I don't have Wi-Fi And restoring your "backup" (Basically, just a copy of the .kobo folder after its been setup) would allow you to use your kobo without having to be on the latest firmware. I'm just curious if Wi-Fi would works for you on the original firmware, not the most up to date one.

I am wondering if it is a bad wifi radio.
Will it even search for wifi?

It searches and finds the wifi connection but it fails to connect.
I tried it before upgrading the firmware and after.

From your posts, that's what I thought was happening. One thing that hasn't been suggested is to turn logging on on the device. Add the following lines into the "Kobo Reader.conf" file:

Code:
[DeveloperSettings]
EnableDebugServices=true
Then restart the device and try to connect. After that, connect to the computer and post the log. The log is in the .kobo directory and will have a name starting with "syslog-" followed by a timestamp. If we are lucky, we'll be able to tell what is going on. And remove the above statements from the config file. They have a tendency to prevent the device from sleeping and hence the device uses a lot more battery.

Other than that, until you can test on another WiFi network, I can't think of anything. But, I'm tending to think the device is faulty. If this is new, I'd return it. If you got it from someone else, I'd ask if they were having problems with it.

Just quickly posting what I did today.
I took the Aura to town and connected successfully to a wifi hotspot.
When I returned home I added an additional access point to my network. The Aura would not connect to it although other devices connected just fine to it.
Then I suspected that maybe my OPENDNS configuration was blocking something that the Aura is trying to connect to so I turned OPENDNS off and went back to my ISP's DNS but it still would not connect.
Then I went into my router and manually configured an IP address for the Aura's MAC address but it still does not connect.
I checked to see what logs might show in the router but found nothing helpful.
Now I will try your suggestion of turning on logs on the Aura. Hopefully it will show something.

What model of router are you using? What firmware version?
Do you have a guest network enabled?
Have you tried to reset your router to defaults?

I'm no expert but it looks like DHCP is failing for some reason and then connection is lost, the file dhcpcd-eth0-Wi-Fi.lease is never written.
From my log;

Sorry, I had to edit my last post because it was the wrong file.
I went back to the router and removed the IP address I had manually assigned to the Aura just to see what difference it might make in the log.
Here is the latest log

Are there two wifi networks on your router? bot and CROW'S NEST? If so were both there when your other device was initially setup?

Thank you all for your suggestions.
I finally got it working.
I almost figured it out on the first page of this topic but I did not test every wireless mode.
So with my Linksys EA8500 the only wireless modes that work for my Aura are the 2.4GHz "802.11b Only" and "802.11g Only".
The modes that do not work with my Aura are "Mixed", "802.11b/g" and "802.11n Only" and the 5ghz band is not seen at all.
I wish I had tested every mode to begin with but unfortunately I only tried ones that did not work.
What really threw me off is that my Aura HD has no problem with the 2.4GHz "Mixed" mode that I have been using.
