Reading those threads again I'm wondering if a plugin could be developed along the lines of Hindsights METAmachine for maintaining and assigning keyword hierarchies in controlled vocabularies - one that would include the ability to import vocabs from sources like LoC, BL, GNL, IPTC, Goodreads ... etc.
I have used METAmachine for classifying large image libraries in conjunction with a bespoke DAM application, it was excellent. BR |

Some keywords – Library of Congress Classification (LCC) and Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) – can be downloaded via the Library Code Plugin by DaltonST. I use it sometime to get an idea for my own tagging.
What is GNL? |

GNL popped up recently in context of a metadata source, it's the German National Library - I'm assuming it would have a downloadable cv, as some similar institutions have.
But the plugin I had in mind would allow users to define their own keyword hierarchies from scratch. As well as import them from external institutions, like national libraries, industry associations, etc . . . even this ==>> LG Inform Plus - Standards. ![]() It's a blue sky idea ![]() BR Last edited by BetterRed; 08-09-2016 at 04:02 AM. |

This such a good and useful thread I think it would be good idea to put a link to it in the Wiki or make it sticky.

I use my own tags. It's still a mess.
I use a genre column, and two tag columns, and still can't easily find the right tags. I need tags in order to find books, and in order to check if they're the right books. For reference books, besides genre, I may list: 1. File format issues, such as if the source is in pdf, and my version is in djvu for smaller file size. 2-4. Certain topics it covers. 5. A dummy tag for "reference" to keep it part from the fiction. 6-8. If it is unreadable, oversized, and/or redundant. 9. And the source. (Internet Archive; Such-and-Such Library.) For fiction, I may list: 1. File format issues. 2-4. Certain genres and themes, besides the main genre. 5. A dummy tag for "read" if I've already read it. 6-10. More genres and themes and also triggers. 11. And the source, again. So it adds up. I try to log works I'm using, or works I've looked over and haven't found useful, in Calibre. I sometimes remove the file, if it isn't worth keeping, but keep the record with the tags. |

So for other people using many tags, does it work better to use more specific tags (e.g. "contemporary history," "Roman history, etc.") or more less-specific tags (e.g. "Roman" and "history" as separate tags)?
