The micro-etched glass screen is crafted to eliminate glare and feel like paper to the touch. Is that different than the substrate you are talking about? |

I had other problems with Kobo, and went with Android.
To be fair, the original Glo though seemed to be sturdy enough physically. Software updates could cause hiccups. I had it in a sleep case, and while it stayed in the house, it could get dropped, accidentally kicked, (I read on the floor) or knocked over. My old Nook wifi still runs and has not broken. Hasn't been used, but sitting around getting stuff piled on it. The other half's used basic Kindle 4 has a puncture or something on the screen, looks like a large bad pixel but isn't. He can still read with it. (I got him a new one which he won't use until he has to.) The ads for the inkBOOK do say glass. Glass is usually fragile. Forewarned is forearmed. Gorilla Glass is pretty sturdy, but I don't think readers use it. Phones and tablets do. Now if the instructions about rooting the Glo are still around, and you can change to appmarket for browser and readers, and remove Google and Kobo entirely, I might give that a go. I've had rooted phones. |

Most of the e-ink devices have plastic surface on the top of the screen. Not mirror smooth surface but a matte one. Voyage and a few other top-of-the-line have glass as the topmost layer. The glass on Voyage is micro-etched, so it is very smooth to display crisp font outlines, yet it doesn't function as a mirror. |

The substrate is a very thin layer of glass that the e-ink display material and circuitry is connected to. It is separate from whatever thicker material is used on the outside of the device.
