I've been reading in the dark since I was 5 years old. I used to have to use a flashlight, and hide under the covers. Even when I got older and didn't have to hide it anymore, I still used a flashlight (or clip on light), because it's more comfortable FOR ME. If you don't like it, then that's fine, but please don't tell me that it's "bad".

1. No other room to go to. I live in a 400sq foot apartment. I have a no bathroom rule for my eReader and tablets.

2. This is a joke right?

3. No lamp and no place for one not he would let me. Our modems and routers have his hats on them because he says they are too bright.

4. Now I know you are joking. :-p

#1. Hope you allow paper in your bathroom.
#2. Full head mask might work better.
On #3. Aluminum Foil works better.
#4. No clue.

1. I get tons of magazines subscriptions for free. We have a magazine rack on the back of the wall by the door. Those are for bathroom reading. Paperbacks not allowed they would get wet and yucky. The magazines do get water on them but once I read them I have no intention of keeping them.

3. I would think not only would it cause WiFi interference you'd have overheating issues. The light is coming out of the holes in the body of the modem and router. It makes really cool light patterns on the wall and ceiling.

3. I misread and thought you meant lamps. My apologies.
My step dad put his modem under the tv and hidden.

I have an alarm clock beside my bed. I put my reader in front of it when I go to sleep The other alarm clock has a solar filter (a filter you can use to watch directly into the sun) in front of it.

I did check my husband's PW (3, I think it is...), it has a fairly dark setting with the lowest light setting, but the screen had a bluish cast over it (probably because my H2O has a yellowish cast, and I compared it to that), which made it look darker, if you know what I mean...

I disagree. Reading with the front light on is a nightmare.

I recommend to disable it via jailbreak and patch.

Ah...you mean that it's a nightmare *for you* For me, having the front light makes it immeasurably better.

I went with option 4b, but it has other costs...

At least I can read in the dark as much as I like!

I'm sorry was the OP talking about reading with a flashlight? No. So I wasn't talking about that. I'm talking about reading a glowing screen in the dark. I'm sure there are plenty of people who can do that too without problem, but I can't and OP can't either apparently.

But if you missed my tongue in cheek tone, or if you insist on taking offense, by all means do. I wouldn't presume to tell you what to do or how to feel.

Sorry...I left off the part that now that I have readers with lighted screens, I no longer need a flashlight or a clip on light, and reading in bed is even better.

What I was trying to say is that I have read in bed in a dark room since I could read, and I'm not going to stop because you think that reading in the dark is "just bad". Just because you don't like something does not in any way, shape or form make it "bad".

And yes...it does tend to bother me when people characterize one of my favorite pastimes as "just bad".

Sorry for missing your tongue in cheek tone, but...yeah. I was blinded by the "just bad".

I found the light too bright at the lowest setting as well. As my eyes got more and more used to the dark, it seemed brighter and brighter. (I read an hour or more) I was interested in trying the blue shade, and it is fabulous! I have that on the lowest brightness, and I am once again reading until my vision is blurry. That is how I know it is time to go to bed.

I wasn't sure if blue shade would work, so I got the $50 Fire. Put Calibre Companion on it, and you will have no issues.

I tried blueshade, and for me, there's not enough contrast--it makes the page look like I have it set to sepia for reading using the Kindle app.

Maybe try a different font? I have brightness down as far as it will go. But it does take my eyes some time to get used to it. But it never hurts my eyes like the PW did.

Back on topic:

The Oasis has a much lower minimal light setting (as well as an option to turn off the light altogether).

But the UI to change the brightness is much fiddlier. The slider is horizontal instead of vertical, and much narrower. I find that it is much harder to set the desired brightness, than it was on the PW.
