I'm using the Cybook without SD card, and I still get freezes at boot.
I seem to get them less often than when I had the SD card, but Ican't say for sure.

Yep, sorry about that.
But feel free to experiment on your own without the SD card, it may lead to different results for you, as we don't really know what the root cause is.
You might also be able to confirm or infirm the reduced frequency, which could be an interesting fact to give to Bookeen for their research on the issue.

PLEASE, everyone, let Bookeen know you have a problem....I did, and they've had my Cybook now for over a week - only one feedback from them and that was to the effect 'there is nothing wrong' - but we continue to test....

Before you sent it you should have found a test procedure that triggered the error and then make them tell you axactly how they tested it so you could confirm they used your procedure.

I have had an item with intermittent faults were I described how the fault was triggered but the service person did not test it as I had descibed and just returned the item saying they could not found any problem.

That's the problem, I never had the chance to ask them - they've sent it back without giving me any opportunity....

I think the problem here is that we don't know how to trigger this freeze at boot, we only have suspicions about some factors that might increase the probability.

For me it seemed to be increasingly coincident with battery re-charging...

Do you let your battery go flat before you recharge, Geoff? I keep mine fully charged by topping it up every couple of days with a 20 minute connection to my PC. I never get lock-ups.

No, the battery was never depleted much beyond 70% before I re-charged...That'll probably make the frequency of re-charging every 4 or 5 days....
Only once did I forget and it went dead, but that was way before 708.

From what I've read, the suspected factors are :
- letting the battery go dead before recharging
- using an SD card

But, as I said, these are only suspected factors and the link between these and the actual freezes is not proved.

It's been a few days since I've read on my Cybook, as I've got a batch of pbooks someone has lent me.

I turned it on today to show a colleague and I was granted with 2 freezes in a row :
it froze at startup, I reset it, then it froze again when I started it a few seconds after the reset.
I've reset it again and left it in my wallet for about an hour. I've just started it again without any issue this time.

90% left, no SD card, no additional folders in the Ebook folder
Go figure ...

I experienced three lockups at boot since the latest firmware upgrade. I hadn't backed it up in a while and when I copied all the files from the internal memory I received an error on one of the Palatino fonts and it wouldn't let me eject the Cybook (I have a Mac). I ran a volume repair on both the internal memory and the SD card without any errors. I rebooted and had the same problem so I deleted the Palatino fonts and everything has been working fine since.

[knock on wooden head]

Strange because I would have thought a corrupted font file would cause it to lockup every boot. You might want to try copying all the files to your local drive and see if yet get any errors and try removing unused fonts.

I'll have a look with your comments in mind, but I don't remember having put custom fonts on the device.
