OMG! You found that in the FAQ? That's great info, and I just re-looked and still have no idea where you found that line. The only instructions I managed to find were based on exporting the database while the app is running. Thank you!

Turns out, my OS upgrade won't be until next weekend, so I'll have a chance to try further to get this going right before introducing a new OS to the whole works...

Thank you!!!

How do I backup calibre?
Implies proper backup = whole folder.

The rest is experience. (Some of us have been around for quite a while, and have picked up a lot along the way, doing weird things is a learning experience. )
If there's something you aren't quite sure about -- ask!

...

The metadata.db holds the metadata only, all books are kept in a (rigid) folder structure in the same root library folder as the db.
Backing up the metadata only gets you so far. It is mainly good as a unique way of locating the correct library folder.

And - thank you - I will now....

I uninstalled totally - used an App cleaner and checked it just to make sure. I also deleted that hidden file again in the user folder and restarted. When I checked for a new downloader - I noticed 2.50.1 was out, so I downloaded and installed. Got the Apple verifier and........ it froze again! I checked the Console and was getting a zillion (bit of an exaggeration) of this message:
1/30/16 11:30:52.000 PM kernel[0]: CoreServicesUIAg[663] Unable to quarantine: 93

SO - ran the debug -g command in Terminal and got this:
calibre 2.50.1 isfrozen: True is64bit: True
Darwin-13.4.0-x86_64-i386-64bit Darwin ('64bit', '')
('Darwin', '13.4.0', 'Darwin Kernel Version 13.4.0: Wed Mar 18 16:20:14 PDT 2015; root:xnu-2422.115.14~1/RELEASE_X86_64')
Python 2.7.9
OSX: ('10.9.5', ('', '', ''), 'x86_64')

At least I finally got SOMETHING with that command!

So - it's true it's frozen... anybody know why? Clearly, I'm running it in 64 bit, and it's a 64 bit OS. I'm gonna try to run it as 32bit and see what it does...

But, perhaps this sheds more light?

That CoreServices thing is weird, right?

oh - and nope.... no 32 bit option like in old versions...

Frozen in this context is a technical term and merely means that the python source code has been compiled into a binary version so does not need to use the Python interpreter.

@itimpi - thanks for that clarification. But, I'd been hoping someone could make out what's going wrong with this thing...
I don't particularly see anything in that -g command, myself, but I feel like that Console error is more telling - just don't know for sure WHAT it's telling...

I cannot see anything wrong from the debug information.

Have you ever had another monitor plugged in? If you did then maybe Calibre is trying to open something on that monitor not realizing it is no longer there!

Thanks, @itimpi - thought of that - the splash screen is stuck on my main monitor and there's no indication it's doing anything on any other monitor. It was a good idea though...

I wish someone could help me. It errors when I'm logged in to a guest account, so it's not my user account or anything running on it that's affecting it.

This is really frustrating....

Well, I upgraded to OS 10.10.5 Yosemite. Didn't change a thing on this. Issue is still occurring. Damned shame... Got to find an alternative app.

OK, I have a Mac on the same OS version and I don't have the problem you have. I think the extra monitor suggestion is the most likely.

Can you try in a new User account? And check what's in your Displays settings window?

It looks to me, from the debug, that it's starting up OK. I'll post what I get from that this evening.

I think he said that it STILL errors from a guest account (as well as his usual account).

Please do post, I'd like to know what you see

In fact, today, I tried from a new user account, and from mine and another using Safe Boot. Each time, erasing that invisible file for each user. Still stuck on initializing interface.

This is on OS 10.10.5, installed this past weekend.

Btw, I have 3 monitors, but the splash screen is on my main monitor, and there's no other Spaces open and nothing to be hiding what I'm seeing. It just hangs.

Oh, and I'm a woman.

I'd love to get any other suggestions or input. I wish I had error reports, but Console shows nothing. The -g terminal command shows nothing, and I have to force quit every time.

Btw,it's not like I'm technically clueless. I've made a good portion of my living as a Mac Tech over the last 19 years. It's just that I teach more, now.

I've just never seen an error like this, with no signs, and only a few people experiencing it.

Frustrating!

Sorry maam! I wonder what would happen if you disconnect both of your extra monitors, leaving only the one main monitor. Just long enough to see if Calibre is any happier. (Or did you already do that, and I've forgotten?)

Good idea.
I also run 3 Monitors (on Windows). Calibre (QT) does not always deal well when you rearrange the displays between uses.

Perhaps try unplugging two of your monitors? (Although I run a two monitor setup, so that shouldn't be confusing it.)
