Apparently Diana Gabaldon was asked about Martin's troubles and whether she will be able to keep up or not for the Outlander series and doesn't think it will be a problem:
Quote:
“No, unlike George I write no matter where I am or what I’m doing,” she said. “He admits it himself, he doesn’t like to write while he travels, that’s just the way he works. Everybody has their own writing mechanism. When I began writing, I had two full-time jobs and three small children and I wrote in any spare minutes that I had. I just kept that work ethic, so to speak. I have a couple hours in the middle of the night that I can count [on] when things are quiet, and that’s my main writing time. I write at intervals during the day. I write when I travel, and so forth.”

He has said there are 10 books planned for this series so I was confused why you would start when only 1/2 of them were done... and then I found this at Wikipedia:
Quote:
Ten books are planned in the series, broken down into two sets of five books each. Sanderson describes the planned story arc of the second set of five book as a "sequel" to the first set, with some appearances of characters from the first set

I read the first one a couple years ago and have been holding off the second till the series was almost done but I will probably wait till book 5 now too (pending any changes on his part).

Good idea. I'll add the series to my TBR list, but will also only start to buy/read books after the fifth, assuming that first series is a finished part.

edit: wow. 3 years per book are planned. That is 30 years of writing. So in 2023 I can start reading book 1, and the last book will appear somewhere around 2037 when I'm closer to 60 than 50. I wonder if it's actually possible to plan a book series THAT far ahead and not mess it up.

Now that I'm reading/watching Shannara again, I've realised that Brooks hasn't been writing trilogies for a long time. He has been writing 1200 page books, split up into three parts.

I wonder if other fantasy writers have been doing the same lately. I must say that I've mostly been reading older fantasy.

Well, of course that is still sooner than ASOIAF.
I was disappointed myself when he said 18 months per book was looking foolishly optimistic. But all things considered...
(I read all his stuff, or else will eventually.)

Anyway, the anticipated-but-not-definite finish date for Stormlight book 5 is 2021.

And if anyone can plan it that far ahead it is him.

I'm often wondering how some writers can write books at a pace of one every six months. Mostly, those are writing about one or two characters as main protagonists, and often in a shared world too.

It's probably easier because the characters, the backstory, and the entire world already exists.

edit: That guy (Sanderson) can write more books and series at one time than I have time to read. If he really finishes Stormlight 5 in 2021, I might just be able to give the series a go... after the five hundred million books I wish to read, games I want to play, and music I want to listen to.

I think I'm amusing myself to death. Too much to do that can't be done because I have to go to work every day, without which I can't even buy stuff to amuse myself with.

Sanderson is a beast when it comes to output/production. If I enjoyed his writing, it would be a match made in heaven!

I'm not sure I care any more. I'm having trouble working up enthusiasm for the HBO series too. I might have hit my limit, not sure. Starting to question "The Walking Dead", too.

How good is the tv series adopted after the books? Is it a straight 1:1 translation from book to tv? And when do you stop if it is setup open ended?

I think I tried a few episodes (tv, not book) and didn't really see where it is supposed to head.
