The problem as I see it there's not proper way to filter what you want or don't want.

You want just self-published; can't do it.
You want without self-published; can't do it.
You want without Kindle Unlimited; can't do it.
You want just Kindle Unlimited; can't do it.
You want just Kindle First; can't do it.
You want to see just books with typesetting enabled; can't do it.
You want to search for books in a given price range; can't do it.

There is a lot you cannot do that you cannot do. What you can do is get a mess of a search result.

Searching is a mess across all categories at Amazon, not just eBooks.

Top of my list for amazon book search is a filter by length. I have asked them for that for some time now. Lots of my search issues would be solved if I didn't have to look at all the shorts.

I'd also like a longer, much longer best seller lists. Used to be a full list, now its just "featured", or "popular", not actually "best seller" anymore. Can only see top 100.

I just about given up browsing and just go by goodreads listings and recommendation from other readers. Or I just stick with tried and true authors.

How would they gauge length? Can't go by file size. Not all books have a "page" count. AFAIK they don't keep track of word count (which would be the best way) and so many novellas have a books worth of excerpts at the end for other books it'd be hard to do any kind of auto length detection. It would definitely be nice to have more filtering options, just not sure how they'd do it in this case.

Maybe the same way they figure page count for books that are in KU?

Every book I look at has a page number listed. If there is a paper version, it takes it from there. If not, they use some kind of formula. But they could just use that field as part of the search filters. Just like they use price, publishing date and others. So I could have the option to not show anything below 150 lets say.

I do not work or think in word count and never will. Pages and locations for kindle books. Pages are close enough for me and have worked for books for a very long time.

I don't want to make a comment about which site has the best search--they all have good and bad points.

I am, however, interested in the statement that I emphasized above. Have you ever found a general book store that separated the Fantasy from the Science Fiction? (I'm not talking about specialized stores like Baen)

It's not unknown but they just use whatever classification the publisher put on it.

Amazon could do that for big publishers but small and self-published books are often tagged as both SF AND Fantasy not to speak of the folk to whom Fantasy mean erotica.

And the Usenet rec.arts.sf.written FAQ has a reminder "If you think you can accurately split SF from Fantasy you haven't thought properly"

Baen and others have published "fantasy without magic" for example
