1- There are very cheap cases and sleeves at Amazon. You will probably like it enough to want to spend a few bucks protecting it.

2- You can get 32GB cards for under us$10. I've bought SANDISK 32GB for $8.50. Prices vary with time.

3- You can add Google Play without rooting, if that matters to you.

Other than that it is an Amazon-centric Android tablet. Minimal learning curve if you're familiar with Android foibles.

My sister tried it and couldn't get it on the Sdcard. I haven't had a chance to check it to see if it is just operator error or not. She's pretty savvy, but this is the first tablet she's ever had and she's only had it since early December.

If only music and videos can be put on the sdcard that lessens its usefulness. It is up to the OS how it handles the sdcard as well as the app developers. Not sure how Amazon will handle this as it was never an issue with their tablet OS until now.

To choose what content is stored on your SD card, open the Settings app on your Fire Tablet, tap “Storage”, and tap “SD Card”.

Activate the “Install Supported Apps on Your SD Card” option and your Fire Tablet will install apps you download in the future to the SD card, if the app supports this. Any of the app’s user-specific data will still be stored in its internal storage.

Enable the “Download Movies and TV Shows on Your SD Card” setting and videos you download from Amazon’s Video app — both movies and TV shows — will be stored on the SD card.

Turn on the “Store Photos and Personal Videos on Your SD Card” toggle and photos and videos you capture and record on the Fire tablet will be stored in its SD card instead of the internal storage.

I like the tablet much more than I thought I would. I had the first Fire tablet, and the 7 HD, and the 6 HD. I ended up giving them all away, the OS put me off more than anything, but I will probably keep this one. The screen is about the quality of the first Fire tablet, the speaker is pretty lame, and it is slower than the Fire HD 6. But I like the the rounded corners better than the hard edge on the HD 7 Fire, and the OS is pretty polished, it is a nice compliment to my Paperwhite 3 when I want to switch over to text-to-speech. Impressive tablet for $50, and you folks that got it for less did well for yourselves.

I always buy covers for my tabs, and my phones for that matter, I won't swear that I'll skip a cover for this one, but with the textured back, and to keep it lightweight I'm still considering skipping a cover.

I ordered one of these on Black Friday for $35. It was on long order, finally showed up in December with a few dead/stuck pixels.

Talked to C.S. who could either ship me a refurb or wait a few extra weeks for a new one. Told them NBD, I'll wait, and they comped me $10 in Amazon credit for waiting. Got it in late January.

All told I like it for $25, it's a functional/decent little tablet. Had to figure out how to root / add google play before updating, but with Google Play it's neat. Always nice to have a tablet I can screw around without many $ being on the line. Maybe I can throw CM11 on it later.

It's probably the best cheap super-cheap tablet I've laid hands on. That's not saying much but it's better than the Acer Iconia whatevers with bad viewing angles and the chinese junk of the world.

If all you wanted was to add google play, that can be done without root; also works on 5.1.1. It's on XDA.

Root was safer (let me block updates, for example). Assume I'd need it down the road for flashing CM also.

Is it normal for the power charger/micro usb port to be so far back in the device? Somehow looks wrong compared to my other tabs and phones, none go so far back into the device.
