One further question - is backing up calibre same as backing up ADE i.e. make a zip drive of the calibre library in 'my documents folder?

Thanks

Yes, just back up your Calibre library folder.

Firstly, it's important to note that Calibre is not a DRM-removal tool. This is important, because in many countries it is of course illegal to write or distribute such tools, and Calibre doesn't break any laws. You may have added "plug-ins" to your Calibre installation that carry out that task, but they are not a part of Calibre!

If you want to re-add a book to your Calibre library, you can either delete the entire book and then re-add it, or you can just delete the format you want to replace, and then re-add that format. The latter is easier if you've spent time editing the metadata of the book, for example.

You need to delete and re-add.

Also worth noting is that you can select multiple books and send them at once.
Since calibre natively understands how to deal with ereaders, it automatically sends them to the right place, and if necessary converts them to the right format in the process.

And since you have a Kobo, calibre can also create collections for you.
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=193184

Device integration is a powerful thing.

sorry for all the noob questions lol
You don't need to remove your books from the device and resend them, just send the new ones that way.
You might need to resend them to fix the metadata, by my personal preference I hate the junk that appears in titles.
And metadata needs to match up if you want to manage collections via calibre as I mentioned above.

thank you all for your help. All done ran over night however noticed that Calibre library is double the size of the ADE library - should i therefore be going into the library and remove each original_epub from the path? as in the path there is an epub and original_epub i assume the one titled EPUB is the new converted one?

What does everyone else do

Well, I don't know why you converted all your books, an EPUB-to-EPUB conversion is typically done in order to pummel a badly-formatted book into shape -- for people who don't edit it themselves.

An EPUB-to-EPUB conversion is definitely not needed for DeDRM purposes.

But yes, if you have an ORIGINAL_EPUB it means you converted and now you have two copies of the book.
The regular EPUB is the newly-converted one, the ORIGINAL_EPUB is of course the original.

You can right-click on the ORIGINAL_EPUB in calibre and restore it, or delete it. Depends on which one you want to keep.

Alf's tools run on import, not on conversion.
