If you believe that iPads and iPhones only constitute 0.1% of the web browsing market, you're sadly in error. These data show that 4-5% of web browsing is done using Safari.

I don't even class those as web browsing machines if I'm honest, I know people like them but the fact they have to design an entirely separate site or separate apps just for those devices says it all.

I don't want the mobile web I want the full webpage as I'd see it on PC.

Don't get me wrong I'm no fan of adobe they make some of the most exploitable buggiest software on the planet in fact but in my opinion Flash simply has no alternative it's certainly not HTML5.

iPads don't display "mobile" versions of sites. Their screen resolution and size is such that standard websites work absolutely fine. With the greatest respect, too, the important thing is what server logs show that people actually do use, is it not, rather than what you think they should be using? The stats I linked to in post #31 above are actual, real-world, data.

On most Android Browsers you can switch the user agent to iPad and get the iPad layout which is usually quite different, it's a trick I've used on the BBC iPlayer site when they tried to force Android users to use the "at the time" rubbish application with poor streams while the Apple devices still got the real streams directly from the page.

Either way though I'm not a fan of the mobile web and back in the gingerbread days my phones were as good at browsing as having a PC in my pocket, nowadays they have went backwards to either mobile layouts missing stuff all over the place or popup nags asking you to install the app.

I think Android browsing has gotten pretty terrible since they stopped flash, and the desktop situation would be exactly the same do we want a world where we have to download individual programs to browse a site properly on PC's like we have to now on phones.

Bowing out of the thread as I've made my opinion known.

I run into trouble with a few sites' mobile implementations on android. When I do, I just tell Chrome to show me the desktop version of that site. Pretty smooth sailing for me when browing the web on my Nexus. *shrug*

The End of Flash is killing the Internet because it's all wicked plot by mobile device makers to turn the whole internet into apps. Glad we finally got that cleared up...

My $0.02 -- HTML5 is an absolute godsend for a non-Windows user. Finally I have an alternative, predictable way of seeing things on the Internet that doesn't rely on Adobe's unpredictable trash.

I was amazed to see on the stats I linked to above that 64% of people accessing that particular site do so using Chrome. I had no idea that it had gained such popularity.

Interesting. I wonder if it's because it's the default browser for most android phones and tablets?

That's an excellent point, and one which hadn't occurred to me. I'm sure that accounts for it!

And because many people get Chrome on their PC the same way they got the Ask Toolbar.

I always set the user agent to desktop because setting it to iPad used to give terrible results because iPad couldn't use flash. That is different now that more sites uses HTML5, but I got into that habit years ago.

Really? I've never had Chrome try to sneak onto my PC that second-hand way. I proudly downloaded it and installed it manually.

What software out there are you seeing that tries to stealth install Chrome?

At various times Chrome has been one of the standard "Suggested Apps" that got installed via the usual bundling culprits. I know it was one of the things sometimes installed by OpenCandy.

I have no idea if Google still sneaks Chrome onto peoples' PCs that way. But I believe most of these adware installers first scan your PC to see what you have installed, then offer selections from among what you don't have sneakily installed yet. So since you manually installed Chrome, you wouldn't see that offer.

Google has tried to sneak it in if you install Google Software like Tools. Forget to uncheck the inconspicuous boxes and it would be installed. I have also seen it listed with Java installs.

What drives me insane is that desktop sites will require flash, while if you switch your User Agent String to a mobile browser the mobile version will use HTML5. Facebook does this, for example. Twitter too.
