If every book is appropriately shelved by the user after they import it into Calibre, there will be never be any books on the device that are unshelved.
Sorry for the confusion.

Can you please show me a thread that shows in simple easy terms how to show this collection column? Adding collections is a pain IMO. I have searched bookshelves and collections in the calibre forum but I haven't found any instructions that were easy. I did see how to use meta tags, but I didn't really want to do that. I guess I can and edit them all...

There's a sticky thread in the Kobo forum. The instructions might not look easy at first glance, but it is quite straightforward to follow them step by step.

The column I am talking about is on the device list. It is a read only and cannot be changed. To see it:

- Connect the device
- In the toolbar, the library button should get a second button next to it for the device. If the device has an external SD card, that will show as another button.
- Press the device button.
- The device list is shown with all the books on the device.
- The last column is the collections on the device.

As you have Kobo devices, there will be two pseudo collections. These are "Im_Reading" and "Read" which map to the "Reading" and "Finished" filters in the Kobo library lists.

Kobo and Sony devices display the current collections like this. I don't know what other devices do this.

To do the collection management from calibre, see https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Kobo...nd_Collections. This is what meera is referring to. For that configuration, you use one or more columns in calibre to create collections on the device. You can view these columns in calibre without having the device connected.

Thank you, I did read this but I didn't think it was what I wanted. I though I read it made series shelves, which I don't want.

That is a much easier way to change what I have read instead of going through almost 100 pages of books on the reader.

I am thinking maybe tags is the way to go. A long time ago I made my own tags with a *, ie; *YA Fiction, *YA Romance, *Epic fantasy, etc... I don't remember how I did it on my Nook but I know it worked.

But, a new model Kindle cannot be jailbroken without opening it up and invalidating the warrenty. So let's forget anything that can be done with a jailbroken Kindle and focus on what can be done with a stock Kindle.

So... then it's a good thing the stock Kindle already has a not-in-collections view, right?

But with a stock Kindle, you have to manually make the collections and manually put the eBooks into the collections.

Which is entirely irrelevant to the point I had been making in the post you originally quoted.

But then, you knew that. You're just trying to stir up trouble, as usual.

You were talking about doing a two-way collections sync which is not possible without being jailbroken.

If you want to track what you are reading, I recommend my Kobo Utilities plugin for calibre. That can store the current reading status of the books on the device that are in the library when you connect. Once you have that, you can do some other tricks to put the books collection for each state (unread, reading and finished).

That's exactly what Collections are on the Kobo - user-defined tags. They used to be called Shelves in older firmware, which is why you'll see that term also.

Thank you. I remember having the shelves on my Nook, but I can't remember how I did it. I think I made tags and it just automatically did it... I just have to do some more research now because things have changed so much since I last had time to read.

I don't know how they worked on the Nook, but on the Kobo, you choose one or more columns in calibre, put them in the driver configuration and the next connect should create the collections. The full description is in https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Kobo...nd_Collections.
