Both Bookeen and Sony will repair machines and replace the screen should you break it.
I followed up on the repair service question in that thread and Amazon gave a different answer. I posted this reply in that thread.

Hello from Amazon.com.

Thank you for writing us to inquire about how the Amazon Kindle would be serviced after the one-year warranty period is over.

As you know, your Kindle is covered by a limited one-year parts and labor warranty. If you experience a performance issue with the device after the one-year warranty is over, please contact us for hardware support by calling one of the numbers below:

Inside the United States: 1-866-321-8851
Outside the United States: 1-206-266-0927

If we determine that your device needs service, we'll provide you with further information about getting your Kindle repaired.

Wow - this is the best forum I've been on - beats the Blackberry stuff by a mile.

OK - I think most of you think the Kindle would be the easiest and best option for me right now. And, because Amazon has lowered the price, it is less of a stretch to commit to it for a while. I know I'll have a wealth of questions about managing content once I get it, so I'll be back soon. My husband and I are going on a long-distance trip, with 20 hours of airplane time in each direction. I bet he'll want a Kindle by the time we get back - if not before.

If you'll be gone less that 30 days, order the Kindle, take it with you and give it a real test. If it doesn't work for you, return it before the 30 days are up.

I hope you don't mind if I take the liberty of clarifying this a little bit. You can get DRM-free Mobipocket books from a few other sources via Whispernet. You can get many Public Domain and Creative Commons works from MobileRead and Feedbooks.com. I believe Fictionwise also sells some titles that way. I do think it's limited to DRM-free titles and Amazon will charge you the 10 cents to send the book, if I'm not mistaken. Most current books you would likely be buying from Amazon, though. Their prices are usually the lowest so that's not necessarily a bad thing if you don't mind the DRM. Fictionwise is very competitive if you join their club, though.

Hi Daffy,

The question in this particular case was not how Kindle problems are handled once the warranty expires, but how non-warranty repairs are handled, and the person involved was undeniably told by Amazon "we don't offer a repair service". Perhaps they will set one up in the future once warranties do start expiring, but it would seem that a repair service is not available at the present time.

I'm still waiting for my Kindle - they sent it the slowest way they could, I think, and the USPS says the tracking number doesn't exist. We'll see - delivery is expected on Monday. I'm leaving the country shortly and need that Kindle before I go!

Whispernet is useless for me, as I live a lot of the year in a state with zero access anywhere - Alaska. I know there are other states with the same problem, and I am disappointed that Amazon chose Sprint as its network, as Sprint service seems to be available in far fewer areas than some of the other carriers. Oh well....
