@darryl many thanks mate.
Kinfocentre was showing an installation of KDE 15.04 but Qt4 - which possibly meant when I shifted from 14.10 to 15.04 QT automatically did not change. So I installed Qt5. Now Kinfocentre shows Qt 5.4.1 But my problem persists. Does not a fresh Qt install ensure the broken parts are taken care of? Or how do I find out what's broken? |

Kubuntu is up to date - I have the backport ppa alerting me. Plasma is 5.3.1.
All the last few fresh installs of calibre that I have tried are all 2.30. I hear what you say - completely remove Qt & bring it up again. Sounds scary - last time I just moved the qt plugin folders and there was quite a lot of strange behaviour. But perhaps I will give it a try. |

I think you have taken a step in the right direction, but the problem is still lurking there somewhere. It does not surprise me that you upgraded from a previous version. Whilst mostly trouble free, such upgrades can be problematic to the extent that sometimes a distro will recommend a reinstall for certain upgrades. I think we are likely at the point where a reinstall is preferable to trying to find the problem.
My only ideas short of this at the moment? Is there a package with specific Python bindings for QT? If so, is this installed and for QT5. Also, I recall apt-get has a dist-upgrade or dist-upgrade option that can be run from the command line which may be worth a try. It seems to me, however, that your best option is a complete reinstall, but preserving and if necessary restoring your home directory. dpkg actually facilitates this by letting you produce a list of packages which you can feed to apt-get to install automatically on your new version. Keep a good backup. |

A fresh install of Kubuntu 15.04 and the problem is gone, filedialog works fine.
Broken Qt most likely. Thanks @kovid @betterred @darryl |
