One thing I haven't seen mentioned: you can "follow" an author on Amazon and get an email when they publish a new book.

It only works about half the time at Amazon. I didn't get notice when Frank Tuttle's latest came out. Also Benedict Jacka's latest--I completely missed he had a new one out. Patricia Briggs--I got notification. Goodreads does notification now too (I think, but I haven't set it up). Fictfact is the most reliable when it comes to notification in my experience.

I've never made any attempt to track the books I've read. I usually remember them and even when I don't I usually remember the author's name and that makes it easy to get a description of that author's books to see which I have and haven't read.
That's not perfect. I do sometimes get halfway into a book and remember that I read it 15 or 20 years ago. That's okay though, as long as I'm enjoying it. If I didn't remember that I read it I probably don't remember a lot about it so it'll be a fresh story to me. Before I began reading ebooks I read paperbacks almost exclusively and I always gave them away or traded them at a used bookstore when I was done, so I never had a collection or library to help me remember. It really just never mattered to me. This morning I was on Goodreads, where I have an account but almost never go there, and I clicked on historical novels, since that's what I'm reading now. It brought me a very long list of historical novels and asked me to rate any I've read. I went through the list assigning stars to them. I probably looked through 500 or so books and almost without exception I remembered that I had or haven't read it and if I had I clicked some stars. There were a couple that I wasn't sure about. I didn't take the time to look further but my guess is that I could have figured it out easily enough if I had. A really good book is hard to forget. Barry |
