Because it requires a headset, something only a minority uses, it will fail as a phone, whatever else it may do.

GURPS: a "tabletop" or "paper and pencil" roleplaying game (RPG), in which each player takes on the role of one (or sometimes more) characters in a story being cooperatively told by the players and the Game Master.

GURPS Space: A version of this RPG set in a science-fiction genre, specifically one involving space travel.

GM: Game Master: the narrator and the only one who claims to know what the heck is really going on in the story. Also manages the actions and dialogue of all the non-player characters (NPCs).

"Resistance to x" : Characters in RPGs may be attacked by various forces, e.g. fire in the form of a wizard's fireball, the breath of a dragon, a flamethrower, etc. In many RPGs, a character may have a "resistance" to such forces, indicating that they take less damage from that sort of attack than most beings would. Generally such a resistance is a character option that uses up some of the "points" (or other limited resource) used to construct the character, i.e. a character with "resistance to shiny" may have to accept being weaker physically or more susceptible to bouts of Unutterable Silliness.

"Shiny": See TV show Firefly.

junque: cool toys.

Generic Universal Role Playing System.

Neat! There are some truly gifted people in your neighborhood then. Seriously, I am thankful for all your hard work. I digged some more and came up with a post from your blog (What makes our electronic paper displays different?) describing the controler in more detail:

Quote:
The E-paper controller
The waveform is software that needs to be controlled by a chip or ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit). This ASIC controls all the switches of the matrix and in simple terms tells the pixel when it is activated. This together with the waveform tells the electronic ink when and how it has to make black, grey or white. This is the beating heart of the electronic paper display. For the iLiad, iRex Technologies has developed the Delta ASIC which in contrary to the industries standard E-paper controller is able to handle 4 bits gray scales (16 gray scales).
Now, of course I had to ask this: Why didn't you offer Polymer Vision to use the iLiad screen for the Readius rather than them using a tiny 5" display?

I guess the concept of the Readius is to have a pocket-sized e-reader, also I think it would look quite silly to make calls with an iLiad sized e-reader

True. I guess we have to wait until e-paper becomes not only rollable but also foldable. Then we could fold the iLiad screen twice or thrice to put it into the Readius body.

They really don't say much bout the phone but in earlier images and information there was a secondary display for phone use and you could use it without opening the screen. I am not sure if the phone capability made it to the final product as they don't mention it at all now on the web site.

Dale, they do say that as a phone it works with a headset, and as I stated in an earlier post, this guarantees that it will fail as a phone: only a minority use a phone with a headset.

Actually this is required in vehicles these days in many states, including CA. I also see lots of folks use BT headphones. It still becomes problematic if you have to open the unit up to make a call to key in the number.
