I nominated Kim by Rudyard Kipling. The title character is an orphan in India, living n the streets in the 19th century. This is the story of how Kim befriends a Buddhist monk from Tibet who has come to India in search of a sacred river. I find the background of India and the relationship between Kim and the monk to be a delight to read.

I have put the list in date order, added authors (with their dates) and links to copies of the books, in our library or elsewhere.

If you spot any mistakes, please let me know. Voting starts this weekend and will be open for a month.

Those people who nominated books and have commented about them in this thread now have links from the book title in the first post. Lots of people still need to tell us about their nomination!

This has actually piqued my interest. I haven't the foggiest idea when I would have time to read it, but it is quite far outside my normal area, which makes it all the more interesting.

Thank you once again for all your efforts Paul.

Perhaps you could add the Adelaide Uni site to The Getting of Wisdom:
https://ebooks.adelaide.edu.au/r/ric.../henry_handel/

(I did include it in my info post about the book, so maybe you don't want to include the link? It's free and both epub and kindle versions are downloadable.)

Edit
Also free at the Uni Adelaide site:
Wind in the Willows, Kenneth Grahame:
https://ebooks.adelaide.edu.au/g/grahame/kenneth/

Nostromo, Joesph Conrad
https://ebooks.adelaide.edu.au/c/conrad/joseph/

Paul, in your first post there's been a linking mix up with my Getting of Wisdom (no.16) and ccowies Where Angels Fear to Tread (no.17).

Can you delete the link under ccowie, and establish it under my entry.

Thanks

It's outside my normal area too, but I do encourage anyone to read it. It drew me in right from the start, with Kim playing on the massive canon outside the 'Wonder House' in Lahore.

I followed the link from the first page--is it out of Copyright in the US? Or where to I check?

All the books in the 1901-1910 list are out of copyright in the US. I've updated the first post to make this clear.

While I don't see an eBook for the 1924 Helen Tracy Lowe-Porter translation there is an eBook of the newer John E. Woods translation. It's pretty expensive though (paper copies available much cheaper) and for some reason not on Amazon UK...

Blackwell's UK £21.60
Amazon US $13.12
Amazon CA $14.99
