That's an expression we use in the U.S. to denote whether or not someone wishes to put money into acquiring it (to buy it) and then to use it extensively. In that sense, it's a colloquial term. To answer the poster's question: It's an investment, but only if you plan to use it for some time, and if you understand that as a PDF reader it is mainly OK (especially if you wish to read with something that approximates holding a hardcover book), but it has serious limitations. At the current price, I think it would make a great investment, but only if supplemented with another, more modern, reader. |

Ugh. Mine came with a totally inoperable wireless. Otherwise, it was like new, which is understandable if the previous customer(s) quickly returned it for this same defect.
With warehouse deals, there's no exchange, just a return and rebuy, which means I lose my 20% off, which comes to an additional $28 cost after tax, leading me to rethink this purchase, as it was originally a marginal buy for me. Love the fuller page reading experience. I seem to be reading things that can be skimmed in much less time. Love the e-ink, it seems a more pleasant, softer reading experience than tablet reading of the same PDFs. Cons I can see: - it's heavy, such that I can't see holding it very long one-handed without any support (probably not more than a minute). - don't like the right-handedness, due to the right side-only controls. Though that's easily corrected by flipping the DX 180 degrees. - PDF text is a bit small to read easily in portrait, while perfectly acceptable in landscape (but losing that nice, full-page view). I wonder how much better kpdfviewer would be. |

I turned off my house wi-fi, and placed my Kindle 3 3G right next to the DX, and got 4 bars on the KK and nothing on the DX, including no "3G" icon (though I don't know if they have that on the DX). Went outside, nothing, couldn't register, couldn't connect to the Store or my cloud. There is a significant number of recent Amazon reviews complaining about 3G wireless failing on the DX. (Unless they're all about the continued cycling of my unit through the warehouse ![]() |

Just a word of warning, the battery could be on it's last legs given how old the DX is.

The Kindle DXG is really well built and at least for mine, the battery still seems to last about a couple of weeks per charge.
I dusted it off and my partner has been reading on it, since the untimely demise of another Kobo Aura HD. The screen has noticeably less contrast and the software is a bit primitive compared to current readers, but the screen size is great and the things still works perfectly. To boot, now that she has been reading on the 9.7" screen for a bit, my partner did not want to go to the 6" Kindle Voyage, even though it looks like a very nice unit. Flat out refused ![]() Since large screen and backlight is a must, and I am not going back to Kobo for more punishment, I am looking at the Hanvon E930. 2nd DX arrived today, it also had inoperative 3G wireless. Yes, I attempted all the usual fixes, including the "311" trick where you type "311" when in Settings and it shows the signals, which I cycled through and tested one by one.
How hard is it for them to test the 3G-only DX? Power on, look at bars. I learned a lesson, to take seriously the seller feedback rating (86% currently for Amazon Warehouse), rather than imagine that a trusted brand name obviates real world ratings. Never again will I deal with Amazon Warehouse. Glad the return shipping is on them. |

![]() But, now I am honing in on two new larger format front light entrants: the Hanvon E930 (9.7") and the PocketBook Ink Pad 840 (8"). They both sound good, with the E930 being close to what I'd imagine a Kindle DX replacement would be. Anyone who has seen both and has any observations? |

Onyx is coming out with a new 8" model soon that is similar to the PocketBook Inkpad. There's a video comparing the two, and the screen looks better on the Onyx device. Look in the Onyx forum for the link.

Here is a link to an article containing the video: http://blog.the-ebook-reader.com/201...parison-video/ I am really temped by the Hanvon E930 9.7" size though ![]() http://the-digital-reader.com/2014/1...creen-android/ Except for that giant bulge for the pen (which I don't need). The 9.7" screens are based on older tech, with a resolution of 1200x825. The newer 8" screens have a resolution of 1600x1200 (i.e. twice as many pixels). I have an old PocketBook 902 with at 9.7" screen, and an Inkpad with the 8" screen, and the latter is just better for reading PDF documents. If you're just going to read EPUB documents, then the 9.7" screen may be better for you, but don't be fooled that the bigger screen size means better resolution.
