The 1 in 2000 figure applies more to identification of ambiguous genitalia at birth. The intersex spectrum applies to somewhere between maybe 1 and 2% depending on definitions, though many will end up identifying within the binary gender system. But then there are other folks without currently-diagnosable biological intersex conditions who identify as genderqueer, nonbinary, agender, genderfluid, third-gender etc.

It's not about not "offending" people, it's about not excluding them.

However, I do think it's worth thinking for a moment about whether the question is about gender or whether it's about sex, and which (if either) is relevant to the point of the survey.

I must be out of date on my terminology. I had always heard that words have gender, but people have sex.

[EDIT: A quick google and read shows I am out of date. I shall use gender.]

I think people would be interested to see the gender split of the people who submit votes.

Authors from China and Japan have been some of my favorites the last little while and they are most definitely different.

A couple of queries Paul if you don't mind: just wondering why you've separated Asia into the Far East and Asia. What countries constitute each category?

Do we need an age category of under 12?

Ditto to the above. Why have three age bands under 30 and only one for 30-59 (which I would be prepared to bet will be where most of the votes come from)?

I'm actually quite offended to be lumped in with both callow 30 year-olds and decrepit 59 year-olds

Who are you calling decrepit Junior? I agree with dividing the 30-59 year-old range. Judging by the number of categories in geography it should not require altering the other age categories?

To my mind, Asia consists of the 'stans from Kazakhstan down to Pakistan and then India, Nepal and Bangladesh. While technically also Asia, I could China, the Koreas, Japan and the countries down from China to Indonesia as the Far East.

It would seem a little odd to group India (1billion+, the worlds largest democracy) and China (1 billion+, the world's largest totalitarian regime).

It's weird enough lumping China, the Koreas and Japan together.

Clearly the feeling is against splitting children from teenagers, and for introducing an addition adults category. So be it.
