@AMF, @susmka - Not likely.
Don't make any plans that depend on a Jailbreak for 5.6.x firmware, other than by using the serial port. - - - - We have enough users who have jail broken 5.6.x that our after market add-ons can be maintained. So our supported community is not left out in the cold, it is just much smaller these days. Last edited by knc1; 03-19-2015 at 08:51 AM. |

How do you use the serial port?

Bullet #8 and if you don't find what you need indexed, Bullet #6. (serial port usage is basic to any embedded system, its indexed.) |

I just don't have the manual dexterity to do any serial port hacking, so my jb'ed PW2 may be the last kindle device I own. If it breaks, I'm going to have to go the kobo route and deal with their somewhat flaky software and kepub file format.
You know I don't understand why Amazon cares about the few people who jailbreak their kindle anyway. I guess back in the day when you could use 3g they didn't want people to freeload on their network, but they put a cap on that. JB now is just about freedom and customization and has little if any impact on their business, so I don't know why they just don't look the other way. But no they have to be like every body else and be a d!#k about it and exert every last bit of control. |

It makes no business sense to me.
Their programmers expect to get paid. By now the bill to keep a few thousand users (of the millions) out of their own Kindle must be getting pretty large. There is no way for anyone to know how many Kindles we have effected. Everything is available to the web surfer who happens to find this site without any registration or tracking. The only people who register here are those with a question or problem. Since nearly everything posted here always "just works", that is a very small sample of our users. I just picked up a replacement K3W for under $30 on eBay, as I was unhappy with the lack of audio support on the KT2 I received as a Christmas gift after my previous K3W was stolen. Of course you are purchasing a used item and must take care that it is being properly represented by the seller, but given the eBay purchase guarantee you will not be at a long term loss in case of a shady seller. As Amazon continues to offer new models there will continue to be people who buy them simply because they are new and will be looking to unload their current kindles. There will be attrition as the units continue to fail mechanically, but I doubt there will be a shortage of older units for several years yet. Dave |

Replacing their (few) Kindles for free regardless of the cause of the damage, would be less expensive than paying all those programmers full-time salaries to "protect" Kindles from jailbreaking.
How many people do you think it takes to do this? At least a couple. ![]() How many Kindles do you think brick because of third-party mods? Not many, they are tried and tested. Maybe 100 per year? (Personally I think I am vastly overestimating...) Full-time salary for a couple new people: lots of money. We're talking in the range of hundreds of thousands of $'s. Cost of 100 replacement Kindles: not much, in the grand scheme of things. Ten grand, tops. It's even cheaper if you assume I was off by a factor of x10. ![]() Solution -- don't stop supporting those problems. They won't stop anyway, it costs more time to check than is worth to simply replace it no questions asked. Customer service remains wonderful. Last edited by eschwartz; 03-20-2015 at 02:29 PM. |

People who jailbreak and mod their device fall in two categories:
Guy #2 is hardly likely to complain to Amazon -- that would be giving up on a fascinating programming issue. Guy #1 is exceedingly unlikely to ever have problems. |
