Honestly, I think that the Caecilia-hate is a bit over the top. I don't mean, from you, Wolfie, I mean that sort of generalized loathing (like Gates-hate, as opposed to the slavish Jobs-worshipping). I had a client, back in 2010, that was OBSESSED about how "bad' Caecilia was, yadda yadda, tried everything to get me to make his book in Georgia, I think it was, and lo, when he actually finally GOT a real-live Kindle e-ink, found he LOVED Caecilia. I don't mind it for reading, either, not at all.

No, it's not GAWJUS, but at least it doesn't wear out your eyes. {shrug}.

Since Amazon feels that a slab serif is the type of font they want, they would have been better going with Amasis. It's very similar, but (IMHO) nicer to look at.

I just think it's one of those fonts that makes you look at it when you view it in something like KP,or see a screenshot, but which digests quite nicely on the actual device. {shrug}. That said, it's true I don't actually read in it much. Humorously--because I can't quite ascribe the reasoning--I tend to read different genres in different fonts. ;-)

Well, I don't need it to look exactly the same on devices I don't have... and I am not in the habit of scrutinizing my books to see how they render on different devices. In fact, I have absolutely no clue what font most of my books use... except the MOBI ones, I know those don't embed fonts.

I am perfectly happy with the Kindle's Caecilia regardless of your hatred.

If a book contains special characters not in the builtin fonts, the maker would know by dint of using really weird characters, and embed a font. It is exceedingly unlikely to happen in actual books bought and sold... the ones that do have this problem are not your typical novel.

I'm fairly font agnostic (when it comes to "normal" body text). The only time I care about a font is when an ebook tries to make it so I can't change it (body text, not special headers and such) if I want to. That's sooooo paper.

Given as how I use (and am quite happy with) my app's default font for reading (whatever it is), any embedded font that tries to override that default body text tends to jump out at me like a sore, ugly thumb.
