Though I haven't gotten my hands on an e-reader just yet, I feel it's better to read books on paper than on an LCD (I use PSP). And as far as I can tell, e-ink has some of that same feeling. Perhaps it's all just a mental thing where we think e-paper is better? In which case we are being fooled... However, I hold a button on e-paper being better both for the eyes and as a whole for the reading experience.

So, you're basically saying, "Get a horse." Being the owner of a horse that you are.

I was describing this device to my significant other, who remarks that he hopes it is very sturdy if it is intended for use in a kitchen while cooking. He imagines hot fat, boiling water or salad dressing being splashed on it, and wonders whether it is robust enough to survive for long. He also points out that it would need frequent cleaning as cooks with sticky fingers repeatedly press the page turn button.
If they make a dishwasher-cleanable version this could be a real bonus. (Said tongue-in-cheek.)

But no, give me OLED as a reader, I just presume that the LCD screens are not fit for the task at hand.

all eyestrain is not equal. i've tried several CRT and LCD monitors, have added indirect lighting to my work area so my monitors are 100% glare-free, got special computer glasses, etc, etc. both my optomistrist and my ophthalmologist agree that in my case looking at a backlit screen causes my eyestrain. since i also get eyestrain reading books in very well lit rooms, i guess i'm just light sensitive.

It looks like the real problem may be habits of the user and vanity in not wearing glasses is a contributer (reading between the lines). Neither backlight or refresh seem to be a factor except when refresh and florescent lights clash.

OLED? You really want a display with a limited lifespan that is destroyed if it gets damp?

No, maybe current day OLED tech was a bad example, I'm really just saying that I am all for other (new) technologies, but I really don't like reading books on an LCD screen is all.

Actually there is quite a difference in the various LCD technologies. To lump them all in one basket is not very reasonable. For example the new reflective LCD displays now available in some eBook readers seems much better on the eyes than the active LCD displays.

This thread (and a few others like it) ably illustrate the point that everybody's different, and that everyone's needs aren't served by the same display technology. Hopefully we'll always have multiple choice when it comes to that, so everyone can get what works best for them. For me, LCD is great, in most forms, and I can read on it all day.
