I copy the "blurb" -- which is usually identical to the description at Amazon, Goodreads, or Fantastic Fiction -- into Calibre. You can then generate a catalog of your Calibre library as an eBook and install it on her reader. She can browse for her next book with the cover image and the description just like she'd see if she picked up a paperback in the bookstore.

I'm still not 100% clear on what is being asked. Back in the dim dark day of the paper book I would often, when browsing in a book store, initially read the back cover blurb to get an idea of what a book was about. I was often frustrated when the blurb consisted of endorsements from reviews and other authors rather than a rudimentary description of the plot. Such books rarely parted me from my money.
If your wife simply wishes to read this type of blurb from ebooks you have already purchased, there is some really good advice in this thread. If, on the other hand, your wife wishes to read the blurb to decide which ebooks to purchase reading the book description online is the logical and convenient solution. The other alternative is for her to visit a book store and pick out the books she wants. I know of someone who goes to Big W (an Australian Discount Variety Chain) and takes pictures with their phone of the books they want, then goes home and purchases them online. Big W istelf sells epubs, though I do not know how easy they make it to purchase them instore. No doubt some book stores in your country will offer an easy option to purchase ebooks in store, depending of course on the reader you choose. Last edited by darryl; 01-08-2015 at 08:29 PM. |

Lots more ideas. Thank you friends.
I think that using the metadata 'blurb' as the cover I am getting the info I need for Mrs G. Now to sort out how to get the PW2 to handle collections - about which I have created another thread in the Calibre section. Tony |

The best solution for your Cruise is a Kobo Reader. It has the description for the eBook on the device (as long as you have it in Calibre before you send to device). You don't need WiFi. Plus, with the H2O being waterproof, you can get near the pool without worry.

JSWolf,
By coincidence I had been looking at the H2O. There is a thread running from someone wanting a slightly larger reader for their father and the Kobo is being mentioned. I'm happy with the PW2 but my wife complained a day ago that she finds it occasionally reluctant to turn to the next page. She is giving a hard test because she had just had an operation on her right hand and can only hold the Kindle in her left hand. I read that the H2O 'might' be easier to operate. On the other hand I have to admit that my wife has hands that 'computers' hate (I hand her my phone or my digital camera and the settings 'change on their own'). Thank goodness for eBay. We have two Paperwhite 2 devices less than a fortnight old. If I bought an H2O and she liked it better we could offload the two Kindles at not too much loss. I want to keep her machine and mine the same as that means I can act as her F1 key when she gets stuck on something that acts in a way she doesn't expect. I do want a spare machine or two in case something gets broken or lost on holiday - but I don't want too many machines lying around doing nothing. EDIT. I am not one for wanting to return goods when they work and I think I might have found something better. But having read Amazon's Kindle Return page I change my mind. Clearly they expect people to be less conscientious and to get lots more machines back - and anyway they now have me as a regular Kindle Book customer. Can you elaborate please JSW. I have the metadata stored as part of the cover with Calibre. Is that what you mean. I have also created Collections based on my Calibre tags. Is this what Kobo means when it talks about bookshelves on its web sites? At first glance the H2O does seem clearer. It also seems easier to 'organise' which is my responsibility. I'll let my wife read part of her current book on it later today. If she is happy I'll get a second one and send the two Paperwhites back. Tony |

more than likely the metadata field you want to have populated is the 'Comments' field. i usually blow mine away out of habit, but that's where it pulls the description from.

Sorry. I must be confusing in what I said.
I was wondering where JSW saw his 'description'. I can get the metadate description when I click on a book. Is he suggesting there is another place to see a 'description'? It all goes back to giving my wife something like the 'back cover' of a book so she can see if it is her taste. Tony |

in Calibre: the metadata field called "Comments" typically describes the book
on Kobo device: when you long-press on a book in your library view and select the "Synopsis" tab, you see the same text that was in the "Comments" metadata field. isn't the synopsis the 'back cover' text that you're referring to??? |
