you are preaching to the gallery - I know what not to do, it's the rest of the houshold that I worry about. I watched my wife react to a PDF invoice from holiday Lettings in her inbox a few days ago by double clicking it with no further thought - luckily it was a genuine invoice. I have her PC set up to send backups to google drive for her, but ransom ware can get into cloud accounts from the local PC & proceed to lock up the backups - only an offline backup is safe, and offline backup procedures can't be automated, someone has to connect / disconnect the relevant memory stick each time . and it is convenient to have all PCs on a local network, with write access to public folders, for moving stuff about

My wife seems to only look at the mouse pointer.

I watch the entire window/screen for 'change' while I mouse.
I have status bars showing for everything (Web, POP3 Mail, NNTP) and only click when I see the URL I deem OK in the status bar. (Some bad links are very sneaky)

when you guys are done with debating jump lists, I'd appreciate your take on ransomware vulnerability. google is telling me that it CAN get into win 8 and can bypass both UAC and defender ? in which case I may as well turn UAC off ?
I have Win 8.1 and Win 7 both talking to each other. The Win 7 systems have accounts I've created just for networking and the Win 7 systems use the account the Win 8 systems use.

This way, the systems can see each other no problem. But you do need password protected networking.

our wifi is password protected, so is the router. our wired LAN & our powerline not - someone would have to be in the house to access those & there's no sensitive data kept in public folders
