I think you've hit on the perfect solution. I'd like my last page to say 'You've reached the end of this book. Would you like to delete it now? Yes/No'

Can you make it so, O Kobo Guru? (... just kidding)
That's how its works on the Android/Windows 8 app, once you get to the last page it asks if you want to close the book

ignoring this prompt just leaves the book on the last page

That would work. That would solve the problem of going back to the home screen.

Another thing is books with endnotes aren't going to be finished. You read a book and get to the endnotes, you aren't going to scroll through them just to have the book marked as finished.

So why should I have to do another step when I get to the end of the book just because you don't want to have see the home screen? Why is my desire to go directly to the home screen any less valid than your desire not to close the book? And I'm willing to bet that it's a lot more intuitive to most people that the book WOULD close when you swipe past the end than it would stay open.

I'd really like to see an option for whether it closes the book and boots you back to the homescreen or just leaves you in the book. There are plenty of times where I'm at the end page checking something and not done reading and I'd rather not have to go find the book again just to open it, especially when I'm cleaning up a badly formatted book, or creating one from a scan and I'm checking various pages and layouts.

An option would satisfy both camps.

When I reformat an ebook, I add a The End page at the very last page of the ebook. It's pretty much the same contents as the Title Page I also add (but says The End).

That's why I suggested a "Do not ask again" checkbox. Would you be willing to do this just once? (I bet it's not going to happen, anyway.)

Just for the record: I also dislike the way I am catapulted back to the home screen without being asked. Give us options, Kobo. Please, it's Christmas after all...

That's only because you are (purposely?) misunderstanding what OP is saying. One has to think here to the way Linux and Windows works. Or possibly Android vs iOS. One let's you tweak everything and do tasks as you choose. The other chooses what it finds best and behaves consequently. So, for example, the software is deciding a swpe right to left means "turn the page", yeah, but that's obvious. When at the last page (that you may very easily miss it actually is), Kobo OS decides it means a completely different thing (close the book), and this is "deciding what you want to do" in a much less obvious way. Not mentiong marking a book as finished and the rest.

supporting that function. To my mind, loading a book to check the formatting is a relatively unusual activity. It might not be for people in this forum, but for the normal user, they wouldn't understand what you were worrying about.
It isn't at all, when you get a new book and it's sideloaded, it may be incomplete, and you certainly don't want to read a whole lot of it only to discover your "copy" has not an end. If you only read directly purchased books this does not apply, but ereaders are not made only for books you only purchase.

Quote:
If you are reading fiction, how often is it that you don't know you are on the last page?
All the times where the author has put some remarks after it (think of S. King's books for example), all the time there are final notes or acknoweledgments, and to use your words there are a hell of a lot of books like that. You don't know if there is more to come or not.

Quote:
Again, this is a matter of opinion of what the correct behaviour is. Personally, I've finished the book, so I want it recorded. On the occasions that I don't want that to happen, I just don't finish the book.
No, it's a matter of opinion what you prefer most, the "correct" and the "wrong". There is, probably not such a concept - I mean "correct" - when talking about this subject, because there are not established rules on what is correct.
However, you can tell what is consistent and what is not. And for sure, Kobo behaviour is not consistent: "swipe" always means "turn page forward", except when you are at the last page, where it changes behaviour and it closes the book. Which, again might be preferred, but it also might be not.

As I said, personal preferences.
Preferences are okay, go figures. But.
When you go to the home page from the middle of a book, and then you re-open that book, where do you expect to start with? I guess, the last page you were on.
When you swipe left in any but the last page, where you expect to go? I guess, same book, one page after. Not the home.
So, what one prefers is and must be matter of preferences. But what is consistent isn't, and this behaviours is not. If it had a switch to turn it on and off it would be okay, but since it hasn't, JSWolf being upset is completely understandable, imho.

What I would like is that when I hit the end of an eBook, mark it as read and leave me in it and also give me the option to mark it as read if I am not going to hit the end. I'm not going to be flipping past pages of endnotes in a book that has such.
