It looks like that's not selected. I don't recall changing the setting.

And, is a cover metadata? I guess that you could argue either way but instinctively I'd have said not. And anyway the phrasing used is "extract metadata from file or file name" - and it's going to struggle to extract a cover from the file name

BTW : The relevant setting is Edit Book->Preferences->Integration with calibre->Update metadata embedded in the book when opening

Re-reading my post I see that I hadn't mentioned Edit Book in that particular one. I had mentioned it earlier and probably didn't think it would be necessary to mention it again that's what I was using to view the internal files of the EPUB.

I hadn't known that by default Edit Books embedded the metadata upon opening the book so, sorry that I caused some confusion there. I was simply reporting what I saw without apparently knowing all the facts.

There's a chance you didn't change it. It's been awhile since I've down a new install so I don't remember what the default setting is for that. It may default to being unchecked.

Which version of Calibre are you using? My computer at work is running v1.48, yay XP and cheap bosses , and that specifically says "Read metadata from file contents rather than file name". I can't see why Kovid would have changed that wording in later versions or in the Mac/Linux versions.

And, yeah, that would be interesting to see Calibre try to pull a cover image from a file name.

I don't remember or care about the wording but the default is to extract embedded metadata rather than deriving it from the filename.

Well, if it was a very small image, you could base64 encode it...
