I guess it makes sense -- the "<" causes it to expect tag contents, which aren't there, but a ">" only has meaning in the context of a previous "<".

Exactly what version of Windows are you using? If ServicePacks exist for it have you updated your OS to have all of the SPs installed?
My virtual machine is a Windows 7 Home Preimum with Service Pack 1 installed and it seems to function just fine with the official Sigil builds. It seems strange that you are having so many problems with crashing on your system when most others don't seem to be seeing the same things. Have you run a full memory test just in case you have flakey memory? Are their other system diagnostics you can run? Last edited by KevinH; 02-14-2015 at 11:19 AM. |

Something odd is going on with your W7 install I have the exact same MSVCR QT5 modules as your error W7pro X64 Look at your PATH and see if that got damaged (Sigil is not on the PATH) |

![]() @ebookreadr - I would try uninstalling Sigil, deleting its preferences folder(normally at %LOCALAPPDATA%sigil-ebook) and removing all registry entries referring to Sigil. And then do a reinstall and reset preferences. btw : Sigil is not in PATH on my system. I normally start Sigil via Windows shell Open With, or Calibre Open With. If I want to run it 'empty' I type 'Windows key, sigil, enter' ![]() BR |

OK - v0.8.1 crashed when editing multiple books
Uninstalled Sigil 0.8.1 using IOBit Uninstaller. Checked Registry - only found references to error logs that I had deleted - remove the references. Uninstalled MS Visual C++ v12.0.30501 (x86, x64) Uninstalled MS Visual C++ v12.0.21005 (x64) installed by Sigil Restarted Installed MS visual C++ v12.0.30501 (x86, x64) from MS support Installed Sigil v0.8.4, which in turn seemed to install MS Visual C++ v12.0.21005 x64 - however it is not listed in 'Programs and Features' Tried to run Sigil - screen flashed, no busy cursor, no error, no Sigil. Two errors: Faulting application name: Sigil.exe, version: 0.8.4.0, time stamp: 0x54d01d61 Faulting module name: Qt5Widgets.dll, version: 5.4.0.0, time stamp: 0x5481ef2b Exception code: 0xc00000fd Fault offset: 0x00000000003362f7 Faulting process id: 0x11e0 Faulting application start time: 0x01d052cc75271f52 Faulting application path: C:\Program Files\Sigil\Sigil.exe Faulting module path: C:\Program Files\Sigil\Qt5Widgets.dll Report Id: b86a4537-bebf-11e4-9e00-e0cb4e3fc0b7 then: Faulting application name: Sigil.exe, version: 0.8.4.0, time stamp: 0x54d01d61 Faulting module name: MSVCR120.dll, version: 12.0.21005.1, time stamp: 0x524f83ff Exception code: 0xc00000fd Fault offset: 0x00000000000251c7 Faulting process id: 0x11d8 Faulting application start time: 0x01d052cc8f96877d Faulting application path: C:\Program Files\Sigil\Sigil.exe Faulting module path: C:\Windows\system32\MSVCR120.dll Report Id: cdcd222d-bebf-11e4-9e00-e0cb4e3fc0b7 Ran sfc /scannow - found no problems repaired MS Visual C++ v12.0.30501 (x86, x64), then v12.0.2105 restarted. Only other Event Viewer errors: Adobe Acrobate SidebySide error - this is a normal error regarding FormDesigner.exe - has been around for many years. *Downloaded 0.8.4 Portable from Portableapps.com This functions normally. I did not work on multiple books at this time. |

Hi,
There were a number of long standing bugs in Sigil versions 0.8.0, 0.8.1, and 0.8.2 that were finally tracked down and fixed in 0.8.3 and 0.8.4. I do NOT recommend running any earlier version of Sigil than 0.8.4 as it stands right now. All earlier versions have known bugs that can easily cause random crashes. I have had two reports of issues with 0.8.4 and neither is Sigil's fault. 1. bad or incomplete openssl libraries installed by some apps that results in crashes and failures to start. Solution, find and remove these incomplete openssl dlls as they should never have been installed by any program. Sigil does not actually use openssl but Qt5.4 will try to load and use it if it finds it. There is a thread here about all of this here: (please read it to the end to see if it applies in your case) https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=250921 2. a weird crash caused by the Vista Desktop Theme issue that seems to only impact some Vista users. The solution is to disable the theme to allow Qt5.4 to work and therefore Sigil. There is a thread with more information here (again please read this thread to see if it applies to you). https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...=255321&page=2 So I strongly recommend sticking with Sigil v0.8.4 and report only if and when it crashes in some repeatable manner to rule out instabilities of your own system. Thanks, KevinH |

That's where some Windows developers need to be waaaay more careful when distributing these libraries if their program's directory needs to be added to the path. Case in point:
but ... Kovid has also wisely and conscientiously tucked those libraries away in subdirectories that are NOT included on the system path. The only files in the directory that calibre adds to the path are exes (most of them calibre-specific) that no other program is going to go searching the system path for anyway. My apologies for the lengthy sidetrack. ![]() |

I know next to nothing about Windows dynamic libraries. In Linux, incompatible versions are ignored by the loader. Why isn't the same true in WIndows? Is Qt using it's own dynamic library loader?
