So, I just did a chat session with Kindle support. I have special offers on my Voyage, and not on my PW2, which I intend to sell. I asked if they would swap that, so the special offers would be on the PW2 instead, and they offered to just remove them from my Voyage. Now neither have special offers.

I ordered my Voyage with special offers (my first Kindle with ads) only because the ad-free version would have been delivered weeks later.

Left them on for a week just for the entertainment value, and I'd heard that some of the early ads were pretty good. But having to swipe after opening the cover got old.

The ads themselves are nicely done, but they were all for generic general-interest-fiction/romance type books that I'd never buy. Now if they'd pushed ads based on my purchase history, even ugly auto-assembled ads based on a "Your title here" template, then I might actually have bought something.

And I might have kept the special offers, to serve a rotating list of things-I-might-buy.

Worth noting that once you've removed the ads you can turn them on and off as you wish.

I had the same experience. It was unexpected and very nice.

Huh wish I'd read this thread earlier. Would've loved to transfer my special offers opt out from my PW1 to my Voyage. Instead I just forked over another 20 bucks.

I paid to turn off ads on my daughter's Kindle Touch. I recently got a used KK that had ads, and I haven't yet had the ads turned off. So far, Amazon hasn't put on any ads for products I might actually want - I keep getting ads for romance novels.

Is there away to tell from the box if it has the ads or not?
is there a way to tell on my account if there are ads or not?

if its just book covers can someone screen shot so i can see as i.d.n if the paper white has the ads and not sure if i want to remove them.
( the screen savers are ok on my kindle 3)

My Voyage was purchased with ads and the two-toned screen problem was terrible. I can't imagine it being worse. I'm returning it soon.

I'm a little puzzled by your post, Sian. Only Kindles sold in the US have ads. How did you get one with ads?

I had my Kindle 4 for a couple of years and then decided to cough up the 20 dollars to get rid of the ads. Then I discovered the screensavers for the Kindle 4, unlike the ones on my old Kindle 2, were really boring, so I did the Jailbreak hack to get the book cover of the current book to be the screensaver. I like this a lot, I wish Kindles came with that option from the factory.

The Japanese models also have ads, at least as of the Voyage. That's what I bought, but immediately switched it to my US account so I've only ever seen the US ads.

Now that I think about it, it would have been interesting to see what the Japanese ads were like...

On the back of the one I purchased at best buy, there is a sticker on the back that has various information about the Voyage, one of which says it has special offers.
