Speaking of quality control, I never did buy an Aura (6 inch) when it first came out because of various defects (light bleeding, diamond pattern on screen etc.). I had tried three times before throwing in the towel.

I suspect early adopters have an increased likelihood of being disappointed. The only reason I picked up a H2O day one is because I can just walk into Indigo again if I have to.

Maybe try again at a later time? It really is a fantastic reader.

Is there a reformat option someplace in the firmware that you can use so that the firmware would them rebuild the files it wipes that are needed to the the H2O?

I have done a factory reset three times. I can't get into anything else other than the Kobo settings menu and that's where the factory reset is. I can't access the drive using my pc so I have no way of overriding the software on it with 3.80

I'm out of options and it's sitting by the door waiting to be collected, taunting me. Today's one I can ignore as that is no good anyway, it's being collected supposedly tomorrow but the lovely screen number 2, that's just plain being unfair.

What about letting windows actually di the reformat?
It can only see/reach the windows format partition anyways, so if it doesn't work you can still do another factory reset.

I managed to format the disc using the tool HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool. It completed successfully and as soon as disconnected the H20 I got a critcal error on the device saying I had to do a factory reset.

I did that and then tried a Kobo desktop set up, and

It didn't work........still the same error as before.

Right now I am getting beyond upset now and am fast into angry at the incompetence of a company that has such appaling quality control.

I want to buy the H20, I want to give them my money and my custom but they can't actually provide me with a working non faulty ereader.

It's a catch 22, whatever I do will be wrong.
In the case of the Glo, it was out of the return to store warranty period as her husband purchased it for a gift about 6 weeks before her birthday. Kobo was willing to do an exchange but they required her shipping the Glo at her expense and then being shipped a replacement. I doubted that Kobo would inspect the unit closely enough to realize that the exposed partition had been reformatted under Windows before the factory reset so we decided it was worth taking the chance compared to paying for the shipment back to Kobo and waiting for the replacement unit.

Your comment about potential future issues is valid and even if the procedure I suggested worked for you, you might still run into issues down the road.

Hmmm... looking at your further messages, it appears quite possible that the internal storage is having issues and an exchange is your only solution.

The FAT32 partition format is done as part of the factory reset. Format, copy the files from the recovery partition and reboot.

I've given up now. As far as I can see there's nothing else I can do now. Both H20s are going back tomorrow and I've asked for a refund.

I doubt I'll buy another Kobo for a very long time. I need this nightmare to fade before I risk it again.

You're definitely cursed. I know a lot of people had PW1 and PW2 issues due to odd screen discolouration, but I've yet to see what you've seen.

Best part about Amazon is their refund policy - if the unit is bad, they'll swap it. . Period. I'd hate to deal with Argus, given the issues you've seen on three successive readers.

Needless to say, I'm opening it up in store when I get one today, and making sure they're there to witness if I have screen problems or stuck pixels. I'd do this with my next Kindle, if I could but go into a store to get one. Only Apple seems to have full control of their QC.

Yes I've had screen issues with the Kindle Paperwhite's, like a lot of people, but I've never had this Format Disc error. To have one device with that, and two others with screen defects defies belief. Ironically the format disc error device has the perfect screen.

Just got mine. Perfect screen and at 50%,you can see the light isn't too yellow. I'll attach the image in a few minutes.

This was done in store with both the PW1 and Aura H2O at 50% brightness.

Probably not very useful, but...

I don't know what you were trying to attach but it doesn't make me feel any better knowing your device is perfect.

Yes I still angry and upset and more than a little pissed of with Kobo.

@Josieb1: You're not alone (which doesn't help you either). My first Aura H2O had some defect pixels. So I sent it back. The second one I bought locally (MediaMarkt) and it had an entirely defect screen (vertical lines and only a small part of it showed something at all). Perhaps they deliver all broken devices or devices which didn't pass any kind of quality check to Europe?
